Who wanna?

In other news, proving that our allies are quite liberal and just, the Saudis pardoned a gang-rape victim! Lucky little girl! Hopefully she learned her lesson.

I think I am. I know the passes to attend will be in my email sometime today as I'm on their newsletter.

I hadn't been following the case very closely, so this morning I was surprised to learn that she was actually being punished for breaking a law unrelated to the rape, i.e. riding alone in a car with a man who was not related to her. The Western press has really spun a misleading story for us.

Oh I don't think so - they don't say she's being punished for being raped, but western civ doesn't find the idea of being punished for being in the pressence of a man reasonable. Less so when there appear to be relatively minor penalties for a gang-rape of a female.

The headlines are misleading anyway.

I don't think the "riding in a car" was entirely unrelated to the rape, at least in the minds of the Saudi court, since that is how she ended up "in the position" to be kidnapped. By their thinking, if she hadn't been out without a family member looking after her, it wouldn't have happened. Or, at least that's how I've understood it.

I'm not saying it was an unrelated event, just that it was an unrelated charge, and the headlines I've seen have obfuscated that.

Ah, yes, I see your point.

She was initially sentenced to 100 lashes for riding in the car. When her lawyer had the audacity to speak out about it her punishment was doubled, and her lawyer disbarred.

Honestly I don't think the heads are misleading. She was a victim who was gang raped and she was being punished a lesson to other women to shut up and stay in their place.

I can't see the movie. It is going to suck. Johnny Depp has all but admitted that. I love that show too much to see it ruined. Tim Burton needed to retire about 5 movies ago.

It's worth noting that I am a bit of a snob when it comes to musicals. Sweeney is an EXTREMELY difficult role to sing, and what Depp actually admitted is that he really isn't a strong enough singer to do it justice. Homewrecker Bonham-Carter can't sing at all. But Burton has to use his pet actors in everything, even if they aren't suited for the roles.

Warning heeded again - I hate musicals, I hate singing, and if this is a musical and not just a bunch of pretty pictures then I'm out.

You...hate...musicals? That's it. We're revoking your queer license. Report to your local Hooters for reeducation.

Don't worry, you can join my boy at Hooters. He hates musicals. And what's worse? He specifically despises Bernadette Peters! *sigh*

Meanwhile, it is, technically a musical. But it is not exactly what you might be thinking about with state fairs and big dance routines where everyone is happy and knows their dance steps. It's gory. And dark. And kinda spooky. And there are songs about things like baking people into meat pies.

See, I did like nightmare before xmas - but there wasn't so much singing.

I feel awful about it, you know. I go to all the meetings, drink the drinks, do the dance...I even like Oz (that one, not that one) but musicals? Ick. < shame >

I wanna on the movie, but the last time they had a free preview there was a line that was blocks long at least an hour before the movie. I'm afraid today will be worse and it's sooooo cold!

I'm going to see it dammit! ...but in Houston as that's where I'll be for the holidays. Besides, I like Depp and despite what some naysayers have said, the buzz is pretty good about the film so far. And Burton has said that the blood will flow "like the fountains at the Bellagio." You've got to appreciate that.

i agree that by anyone's standards, the position of women in many other cultures s pretty much middle-ages style. however...

I'm reading "Escape" the book by the woman who managed to escape from the FLDS--when she was 19 she was forced to marry a 50 year old man and become his 4th wife. She had 8 kids. He now has 7 wives and 54 kids by them. This community of 10,000 is basically allowed to run their own town, with no interference or oversight from local, state or federal gov. we've got our own dark age right here, albeit not on the same scale.
