i agree that by anyone's standards, the position of women in many other cultures s pretty much middle-ages style. however...

I'm reading "Escape" the book by the woman who managed to escape from the FLDS--when she was 19 she was forced to marry a 50 year old man and become his 4th wife. She had 8 kids. He now has 7 wives and 54 kids by them. This community of 10,000 is basically allowed to run their own town, with no interference or oversight from local, state or federal gov. we've got our own dark age right here, albeit not on the same scale.
