Who wanna?

In other news, proving that our allies are quite liberal and just, the Saudis pardoned a gang-rape victim! Lucky little girl! Hopefully she learned her lesson.

I hadn't been following the case very closely, so this morning I was surprised to learn that she was actually being punished for breaking a law unrelated to the rape, i.e. riding alone in a car with a man who was not related to her. The Western press has really spun a misleading story for us.

Oh I don't think so - they don't say she's being punished for being raped, but western civ doesn't find the idea of being punished for being in the pressence of a man reasonable. Less so when there appear to be relatively minor penalties for a gang-rape of a female.

The headlines are misleading anyway.

I don't think the "riding in a car" was entirely unrelated to the rape, at least in the minds of the Saudi court, since that is how she ended up "in the position" to be kidnapped. By their thinking, if she hadn't been out without a family member looking after her, it wouldn't have happened. Or, at least that's how I've understood it.

I'm not saying it was an unrelated event, just that it was an unrelated charge, and the headlines I've seen have obfuscated that.

Ah, yes, I see your point.

She was initially sentenced to 100 lashes for riding in the car. When her lawyer had the audacity to speak out about it her punishment was doubled, and her lawyer disbarred.

Honestly I don't think the heads are misleading. She was a victim who was gang raped and she was being punished a lesson to other women to shut up and stay in their place.
