So now I've got to figure out how to settle either the weekend of Feb 9th or the 16th, get the place painted and minor work done (specifically floor trim), and move in either the weekend of the 16th or if need be the 23rd. If I settle the 16th, moving will be especially hard. I think I'll try and settle the 9th.

Any advice on painters? Any advice on movers or how to rope your friends into moving stuff?

Get movers. Your friends can come to the house warming. Movers will get the job done faster and with a lot less fuss. We used http://www.jkmoving.com/ and were pretty satisfied with them.

Thank you! I just feel...weird...not moving my own stuff. Especially when it's just up the damn stairs. But the link is great - muchly appreciated.

You think you'll feel weird when they git'r done in a couple hours while you stand around and give directions?

"yes, please put the couch over there, and the sex-swing here in this corner..."

- movers.
- I have a 'handyman' that's done alot (ALOT) of work for us on our townhouse. He just repainted the basement and master bedroom yesterday. He's good and is very fair priced, although sometimes a little annoying personality wise. If interested, I can email you his info

I still advocate setting up a painter/repairman for one weekend, and movers for another. Less of a hassle all around.
I'll see what I can dig up/help schedule for you.

I would gladly come help* you move, but I will be unwillingly subjected to prescribed recovery activities (or, rather, lack of activity) during the weekend of the 16th.

(*I think I owe you due to past moving help karma.)

Aw...take care of you, and just let us know how you are doing. We'll ask you to move heavy objects later? Hopefully we'll all recover so we can destroy ourselves in the penthouse warming party.

If it were any other weekend, I would definitely be there to move heavy objects and manhandle other things! ;-)

Please save the penthouse-warming party for sometime after the middle of March, as I will not be able to adequately participate in any wild orgies until then. :-D

Floor Trim

What needs to be done with floor trim, just installation? And is it just the kitchen, or whole place?

One bit of advice on the floor trim - paint it before you install it. You can do this before you have access to the place if you have general measurements of how much trim you'll need. I'm anal, so if you're doing a gloss enamel, I'd recommend at least 2 coats. To get a really nice even sheen on the last coat, without brush marks, thin down the paint for the last coat a tad (you can do this with water if you use latex paint) which will allow the paint to "lie down" better and smooth out the marks. Actually, life is easiest if you can manage to paint the walls first and then just nail in the painted floor trim. ;-)

If you get the pre-primed floor trim, I'd really recommend sanding it lightly before you paint it, because I've noticed that they often get the spray airflow wrong and you end up with what almost looks like someone threw very fine sand and painted over it. If you don't sand these down, any hair, dust, etc. will accumulate on these, and when you try and dust it off, any hair in your duster will stick to it too. And it's much easier to sand primer than it is to sand gloss paint.

Also, consider putting a band of caulk behind the trim when you install it to seal any drafts from the airspace in the walls coming into your place. A lot of builders caulk the top of the floor trim, but I personally don't like that for purely aesthetic reasons.

Sheesh.. I did not realize how entirely anal I am about finish work until I wrote all of this!

On a cool note, they have trim that has "channels" hidden behind it so you can run wires all over the place and no one sees them! http://www.wiretracks.com/prod-rf.html is one vendor, but believe I've seen ones that don't require you to cut into the drywall.

Good god, you're a goddess.

So far the trim looks like it was shellac'd, then placed. Some is unshellac'd at this point, and that's what I think needs doing. It appears to be needed in the small br and kitchen, but those are all I noticed (may yet be others). The think the wood is already in the place.

Very good notes about texture and future dusting issues, also the calk/draft issue. I can't do the wire stuff though - this is just the very tiny 1/2 " stuff at the bottom. That is cool though!

What kind of annoying personality? That could matter. If he's a preachy religious/political pushy person it might not work out.

How in hades is it unshellac'd? That takes talent... or was it never done in the first place?

I'm really lost though on the wood status... does placed = nailed, or placed = someone put it on the floor and never attached it? Is this the quarter round stuff you're talking about?

And if it's shellac, that hints that the trim is real wood, right? And you'd paint over that?! (or is it cheap crap wood?)

There is a good chance I have no idea what I'm talking about. I just saw wood quarter round stuff on the floor, and some of it is against the wall and cut to size, but a slightly different color - appearing unfinished.

As far as movers go, ask about 2 weeks ahead of time and ask twice as many folks as you think you'll need
