I said I wasn't going to watch the debates, but I got sucked in while doing cardio after class. My verdict - they both lost. As I said before this nonsense, whoever wins the election, we lose. I think I watched to see what a non-aware amurichun would see...Like the conventions, the 'debates' were merely a re-hashing of the party lines.
Bush - surprisingly articulate. He came across as relatively sincere except for his constant prodding of "he changes opinions" at Kerry. That would have been plausible as a response the first 1 or 2 times, after that it's just hoping repetition beats substance. The comment about forgiving Kerry for being a Yale man...wow...as if the whole country didn't know he was a C student whose name got him into the school he barely attended. He won because he didn't completely bumble through anything, didn't misuse a myriad of terms...Eskimo...
Kerry - mean! The colossal mistake line was utterly pointless, and it's being seen as a highlight. He did do a good job of busting the president on the fact that Iraq wasn't where the terrorists came from. I was annoyed he spent so much time criticizing, bathing in negativity. I mean you have to to some degree, but can't you describe the things you want to do w/o trashing what was done? If you trash what was done, can't you do it w/o resorting to what were basically character attacks? He had some great lines, but ICK he started by thanking the U for having him there...I hate it when entertainers say "Thank you for being such a great audience" but a political leader? Ick.
An anti-Gay marriage amendment didn't make the vote after all, but please note that regardless of which party you support, on this issue the votes were very much down party lines. I don't mind conservatives of the fiscal nature, and I kind of wish we could vote for social and economic interests separately.
Tonight I realized I have made another friend, probably my only one at school. She's smart, hard-working, voting for Kerry, type-A, and completely bonkers. She's way jewish. I have a hard time figuring out when someone is a friend vs. an acquaintence or whatever. I like friends.

Date: 2004-10-01 05:00 am (UTC)The focus is security and the war, but I tend to look at the judicial nominations, cabinet members, executive initiatives, and miss the environment.
On the other hand, Kerry is a business-interest democrat. He's a lesser evil than Bush, but still not good overall. In fact, anyone running is being push-pulled by special interests.
Kerry will look like ass in 4 years if he wins - if only because Bush has sunk us so far into debt that only radical economic change could fix the damage. You know, like the Reagan years did...
Whatever happened to fiscal conservatives?

Date: 2004-10-01 05:39 am (UTC)I do not see it as such. I bash peoples actions too, BUT it does not mean that I am attacking the person. BIG Difference, I.E.
Character attack - You clumsy fuck, you spilled milk again!
Attacking an action - When you spill the milk, you shouldn't leave it there to crust and mold over. Clean it up!

Date: 2004-10-01 05:36 am (UTC)Yes, cheesy. However, did you miss the outline of the format right before that? The man has two minutes to respond and he spends upwards of twenty seconds not responding. He's not hemming and hawing organizing his thoughts, he's just so confident (or wants to appear so confident) in his position that he can burn up nearly a quarter of his time.

Date: 2004-10-01 06:15 am (UTC)While Bush continues with the mealy mouthed, inarticulate, content free recital of his "hard work" and "changing positions on the issues" talking points, Kerry has two overall debate choices: He can defend himself and his record with a strong demeanor, in which case some people will think he looks mean, or he can be nice and be accused of not providing any information on the issues.
I actually thought he came off as remarkably nice, considering how hard he worked to show distinctions between himself and W. But then I wanted to reach through the screen, grab our appointed president, and stick his head down the garbage disposal.
As for Kerry being a corporate, machine democrat, of course he is. No one else would be a viable candidate at the national level. He is, however, strong on a number of domestic issues I feel are important, and I believe he will be more credible in international affairs. Also, John Edwards is not a reanimated corpse resurrected from the early 1980s. But that's a whole 'nother thing.
