I used to consider my weird hair a symbol of my independence, as if this made me better than mainstream society somehow. Now I make the same argument about my lack of skin ink. So me 20 years ago, what does funny looking hair say exactly besides look at me? What would it say today?

When my sister got married five or so years ago, my hair became an issue. I couldn't figure out why, because the bridesmaids' dresses were lavender and the flowers were purple, so it wasn't as if my colourful hair was going to clash. During the ensuing discussion my sister made along the lines of "Admit it: purple hair is shocking, and that's why you wear it that way." And I strongly took exception to both those statements! Purple hair is not shocking -- or at least, I'm pleased that I live in a city where purple hair is not shocking. It's unusual, yes; but the overwhelming majority of comments I get on it indicate that people mostly find it unusual in a positive way.

When I was 17, I definitely wanted to dress in such a way as to send the message "Look at me!" Today it just says, I do things the way I like them, and for no other reason.

But I too find a perverse pleasure in being one of the dwindling number of non-inked folks in the alternative tribe.

The purple hair with no ink is fun...who knew not wanting to make a commitment would make me look so independent.

"I knew a boy named Tapestry..."

Funny to think there's a scene where not having tattoos would make you not fit in

Not in b'more - dethfest is chock covered in ink. I still remember that milk-colored girl with the upside-down crucifixes on the backs of her thighs...

You missed out the double negatives. NOT having tattoos would make you NOT fit into the metal scene. Yes?

Since I shaved my head at 17, I have never been comfortable with hair that could be called 'normal'. My hair has made a few statements, no doubt, but the predominant one has always been 'this is how I want to look'. With the exceptions of the times I thought it had to look normal to get a job.

I still debate whether to dye my hair purpose since all I do is work for the government. I liked purple, but then again my hair was lighter and could be that way with just temporary dye.

Snicker...I should do dreds and then if they protest, file a discrimination claim!

I use my colorful plumage to attract females of my own species and warn predators that I am venomous.
