Progressive appears to be half what I'm paying for insurance with Geico (for condo-owner, umbrella, and auto).
Anyone have experience, good or bad, with Progressive insurance?

We've got Progressive, and they've been administratively reliable and good about paying the few claims we've had to file.

What about USAA? We've used them for years, sometimes they send random money back to us.

I had Progressive from 1996-2004, they were expensive, but reliable and the only ones who would take me with my driving record at the time ;P

I had GEICO from 2004-2008 and didn't like them much.

I had USAA from 1990-1996 and from 2008 to present and love them.

Make it 3 - been with USAA all my life, also have my mortgage, IRA, and some other investments with their banking side. They're not the absolute cheapest (just as their interest rate returns aren't the absolute best) but the insignificance of the difference in financials is IMO outweighed by my never having had a complaint about their service.

I never had any problems with Progressive when I had them. The price kept raising, however, and then I found the same coverage through Geico for almost half of what I was paying. Not sure of their service yet, but yay, saved money!

Irony! I can switch _from_ Geico to cut my premium in half (if their website is accurate, but it should be and all the info I fed them was accurate). I can't view USAA because the random security blocker has decided this military/vet/gov insurance site should be blocked by internet security.

Are you military or is family? They said I cannot use USAA unless I'm in the military---but they referred me to their "partner" progressive instead!?

edit - they even emailed me:
Our auto and property insurance is generally available to U.S. military personnel and their families. Although you're not eligible for our auto and property insurance, we encourage you to take advantage of other products offered by our banking, investment and life insurance companies.

USAA won't let me use them because neither I nor my family are military. Their website referred me to Progressive!?

I tried USAA but they report they only insure military and their family. They referred me to their "partner," Progressive!?

Huh. Maybe that's new...we have had USAA for (I think) all our insurance since Ken and I got married, and he had it before we were married.

I think USAA have always had the military requirement. I was eligible because my dad added me to his policy back when I was a dependent and I believe he was eligible because of his military service.

Huh, I thought that was one of the things "everyone knows". Yeah, USAA is awesome, but it's only for military and their families.

Progressive will take ANYbody, but they're a reliable company. Just make sure that the coverage they're quoting you on is the same as what you already have. (And make sure you get the Replacement Endorsement, or whatever they call it on your condo policy. That means you get a new tv if your's is stolen, instead of the depreciated value of your tv.)

USAA wouldn't insure my motorcycle, so when I started riding I began using Progressive, as did the ex. No problems with service or claims, even when he went down on his bike and had to have repairs done and injuries dealt with.

I also used them for renters as it was cheaper to do a two policy plan with them than using USAA for renters only. I didn't have any claims though so I can't speak to that.

Cool - though right now they may be cutting my good credit discount because, even though my score is (I think over 900) they dinged me for bad credit based on i) new mortgage in past 8 years, ii) car note paid off over 10 years ago (that's "bad," since I'm not buying things on credit all the time?), iii) applied for (and received) a credit card in the past 2 years. Wow.

i've had progressive for 8 years now. Originally they were pretty expensive because they were the only company willing to insure someone with 15 speeding tickets....... 8 years later and a clean record, i pay $60 a month for auto. I heard their other stuffs are good too. The big accident I had, they were spot on, handled everything. I like 'em, and their discounts!
