I am finally getting around to chores I haven't done for ages.

The bar! I passed in MD, but moved to inactive status (in good standing, not practicing law in MD courts) because I don't need active status to do my Fed job. My question has been how my inactive status affected my ability to get "barred" in other states. Now I sort of have my answer and it's annoying:
MD - send us a check and BAM you're active. No problem.
DC - if your MBE & MPRE scores are good enough (they are) you can waive in based on your status in any other state less than 5 years. It appears they are seeking proof of moral character (lack of proof of bad character) rather than whether you have been "practicing."
VA - hates MD. They will waive you in ONLY if you have business and plans to really be there, ONLY if you're active in a state with reciprocity for 5 years, ONLY if you're really ACTIVE (even though they readily admit they know the difference between active and inactive is typically fee payment, not fillings or other practice of law).
VA - has reciprocity with DC. How odd.

So if I want to be able to practice in NY, or VA, I need to be active in DC for 5 years (paying the full $, though nobody cares if I file one parking ticket appeal).
If I want to practice in MD, cake.
If I want to practice in DC, almost cake.
My conclusion remains I see no real benefit to paying for active status when I'm not practicing law outside the gummint.

I've finally put together a summary of my insurance coverage for home, car, and umbrella to check out competitive bids. I can't believe that Geico is the cheapest when they spend a fortune on advertising (this would apply to progressive as well).

I've re-evaluated my current budget and determined what 6 mos of all expenses looks like in the bank. I've decided to expand my view of cash to both checking (I get interest on checking) and short-term CDs. I'm still debating the merits of buying FOOLX vs. my own stock picks.

After thinking I did great on DLs yesterday, my back is tired today. Feels mostly fine, but driving to work my lumbar was screaming at me like I was carrying a house.

Dull de dully dully dull! And here I am writing about it! Wanna hear about my rude squirrels?

Dunno, man, the whole "five years" thing in other states makes me think that, since money isn't much of an issue for you, it would be worth paying to keep your options open. You talk sometimes about govt work being dissatisfying for one reason or another. Maybe you'll want to move to NYS or something and will wish you'd done something so easy and passive to ease your way into another place.

Well that's what _I_ thought, but it turns out they mean the moral character of a lawyer...

Yes, lawyers can make lawyer jokes too.

VA is amazingly pissy about transfer of Professional Engineer certs, too. (I'm told. There's no PE in my field anyway, so it doesn't really matter...)
