I don't seem to be scared of cropdusters anymore. I blame Janna - to not look like the raging coward I am, I rode roller coasters with her and re-acclimated to plunging to my death while strapped down. That...sounds euphemistic.
What I wrote in a 757 that I couldn't see while I wrote it:
"Looking out of the 757 as dusk fell I saw a field lit up with lights around the perimeter. It was a field surrounded by fields and the nearest lights (city or housing) were a drive away.
I'm reading about the rich and the economist is telling me that most of them are self-made hard-working successes. If I am rich, it is because I have stepped and saved carefully. I work hard now, but only about 40 hours a week. I don't display or care about displaying money - it is just security. I suppose my conservative habits demonstrate my poor background as much as a gaudy cluster of diamond chips. I could take steps now to get rich: I could enter mgt and move to something in private sector in 5-10 years to possibly succeed. I could quit and blow my savings risking a venture or franchise. I really could fight into OGC, then leave for a real law firm, schmooze and attract clients to get rich - perhaps even do a joint venture with a former ... I won't do any of these things, but so long as I know I could I am responsible for not being insanely rich. I would likely fail, but not trying guarantees the result. Luckily I don't value the reward.
The whole country is divided into squares. Only water carves it's own path through them. In the plains there are circles, but they inhabit squares. Circles are just the path of the self propelled water's pipes. Out here all the land is sprayed with chemicals and shit before shot with single-use genetically programmed seeds to suck out the aquifers to make 1 of the 6 products subsidized by the government. That shit is scraped off the land to be squeezed into tubes that squirt it into the cities where people live. They eat the 6 ingredients in 80 different ways then shoot it back as shit down more tubes until it shoots back to the fields. The planet will soon be 6 things, and if anything goes out of whack the system crashes.
I also think of dropping out and buying a farm - one farmed by someone who knows what they're doing. If they would apprentice me I could make food, but given competition and subsidies I am not sure I could make a living. Even if I till my own land and grow just enough to eat, my land's taxes would eat me alive."

Date: 2011-01-29 07:18 pm (UTC)I still WILL NOT fly in one of those small planes or even a commuter jet, if there's any way I can get around it.

Date: 2011-01-29 09:36 pm (UTC)Good to know my fear is not unusual, or necessarily irrational, given the odds. I don't want to wind up
like a Kennedy!
