Nov. 3rd, 2010 07:34 amWell, that was annoying but I'll be fine. In fact, this election could be great for me. I've banked on slow cautious financial success, sacrificing years of fun for education and financial investment. Today I'm starting to reap the benefits of my early studies. Sure the country is going down the toilet and the people that flushed it are now back in control, but the chickens that voted for perdue have accidentally done me a favor. I'm edging up into the brackets that get tax breaks, my investment profits are hardly taxed at all, and the poor are so fed up with government they confuse their entitlement programs with autocratic control.
I truly hope there are government shutdowns and furloughs just like 1995 when I first started working for the government. I have the buffer to survive it, know that it is most likely I'd get paid for my time off anyway, and could really use the down time. I fantasize about drinking my fair trade coffee from the french press while I watch the news in my living room.
Best of all - I'm guilt free. I voted against my own interests, for sacrifice, higher taxes, fiscal responsibility, equal opportunity despite socioeconomic upbringing, higher lowest standards of living, and even future investments in the environment. My votes were cast based on what I believe is best for all, so while I profit from the mistakes of the populace I cannot take responsibility for their suffering. I tried to help them and they turned away. Awesome!
It's not all win, of course. The financial instability means my investments could do better but won't as the economy staggers. The government will remain huge, and rather than invest in the future through schools or infrastructure, special interest military contractors will walk away with the wages of the poor to build our guns overseas - companies I don't invest in. I'll have to pay more for security as criminals steal for food and drugs. Socially my sexual preference or specific acts may be illegal, my friends may not be able to engage in contracting (marriage), and churches will be given my cash whenever possible. My safety is at risk due to the drug wars as drugs for poor people remain illegal while the wealthy get prescriptions. Safety nets will cost more as lack of prevention leads to more pressing medical needs, unwanted children, and other symptoms of short-sightedness. I could be richer, but as the crisis likely continues I'll still be more able to get food than many of my neighbors.
I'll be fine. Wish you the best.
