Just had a perspective-bending conversation with my boss. Yes, yes...I'm thinking about and talking about work way too much. I have a huge case that is absorbing my mind. However, my boss noted that the person in charge of this family of cases just last year, based on the workload, seriousness, and complexity of the issues - was _only_ working on these cases to the exclusion of all else. I not only picked up the cases mid-stream when he went out, but have simultaneously maintained a full workload during that time as well. Oh. Oh. OH! Yeah, that's true...plus I'm our newest litigator, he the most Sr? Oh.

This says a couple things to me. I might not suck. It might not always be this way. I remember this job being easier, and that's when I was not as good at it. Imagine if I wasn't doing these wacky cases...this job could be manageable. So, I'm getting better at several areas of this job all at once (with room for improvement, but at least I'm above water) and someday this job might be a regular job - not one that eats my life like I was an actual attorney.

Pant pant pant remember when work was only 40 hours a week!?

You should put this post in your memories, so you can go back to it next time you feel all "woe is me, I suck at this".

I'm really surprised that you can do overtime. make sure you're getting paid overtime. We've been informed that we should not work past our tour, and we are basically told to leave, when our tour has ended. There was some sort of class action lawsuit involving overtime and a federal agency had to pay back-pay for the OT worked.

I'm sorry - I'm being confusing when I say overtime / over 40 hours. I get comp time - my problem is I have to use comp time within a year of getting it or it POOFs into the air. I HATE LOSING LEAVE. So I am 40 hours on the books, but generating comp, travel comp, and unused leave all the time (I only used u/l last year, starting the year with 240 in the bank again). So it's not technically overtime.

You guys seriously need flexitime - that system is so archaic of clock punching. Ick.

(ask me wtf is wrong with me that I didn't take more leave when I was in law school? MISTAKE)

I'm about 4 months from being a 15 year vet though, that is to say 8 hours leave each pay period SQUEE!
