Are flip-flops sexy?
Anti-sexy?
On girls? Women?
Boys? Men?
Pretty people vs. gnarled turtles?
I say turtles because turtles can be cute, and we'll all be gnarled or dead someday, grandparents or that age and appearance or whatnot

Flip flops in the city are just stupid. I mean ICK!
And the idiots who wear them while biking or on scooters, not to mention to shows! Black Cat has a semi official ban on flip flops, because concert goers had to be carried downstairs with foot injuries thanks to broken glass or crushed toes

See - this is why I love indie and the Black kitty. A "stuck up" ban on idiocy - love it.

"Black Cat has a message for those of you committed to bearing your toes:"

Hee... I don't think they would let me in if I were bearing them, even on a silver platter.

Flip-flops: I think they're totally inappropriate for work unless you're a lifeguard, have never considered them sexy on anyone, and actively avoid looking at mens' toes.

Flip-flops are UNsexy.

Feet generally are unsexy.

See I find girl feet can be sexy - in shorts it's nice to have an unbroken line of skin all the way down.

I dunno...socks can be cute but mostly in the 'on the couch in a nightshirt' kinda way.

Flip-flops are not sexy on anyone. They're cheap shoes for the pool, beach, and shower.

However, sandals are sexy.

I have never seen a turtle in flipflops.

I think they can be sexy IF the person's feet are pretty (yes including men's feet) -- in that "I am not trying to flash you any skin, I'm just going out to get the mail and inadvertently showing you some skin" kind of way.

But as actual footwear I don't understand them. I can't walk in the things, myself.

Never seen sexy man feet - I can say some girls have pretty feet, but generally man feet top out at "not ugly."

I evidently have a much higher tolerance for feet in general than most of the people here! But yes - for me, tanned, exfoliated feet with neatly trimmed, clean nails can be nice regardless of gender. It may be because my family tends to have long slender feet (I basically have the exact same foot shape as my dad) so they are on the androgynous side?

Date: 2009-07-24 02:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] peregrin8.livejournal.com
OK, that comment totally made it sound like I am sexually fixated on my father's feet. (Which is beside the point!) I just meant that my starting point of reference is for androgynous feet.

This is a strange conversation.

I once tried to explain what made a foot pretty - clean and neat are given, but what I can't quite lay out is for me it's "round" vs. "square." Man feet are squarish, have callouses, and appear just functional. Pretty girl feet appear more...rounded, curvy if you will. I don't usually find skinny girl feet pretty - I think that covers long slender (no offense, just my taste) as well. When toes look like fingers I'm thinking froggy!

Oh god, oh god, toe rings = gross skank.

LOL! Yes, you and I definitely have different tastes... I also love toe-rings!

I agree w/the above that flip flops are for the pool, beach, shower, and I wear them to my bjj class cuz I am barefoot the whole time 'm in class and usually wrap my feet and don't want shoes on.

I see flip flops all the time on my commute. you know, around crystal city and the pentagon and on the metro. EW. dont these ppl know that they are exposing their feet to oh so much filth?? not to mention how bad flip flops are for your feet in general, w/the toe curling and all. and the noise of the flop flop flop they make smackin' on pplz heels. it's just... unattractive.

dave: flip flops do not always guarantee no socks. there are toe socks for just such occassions. ew.

and I agree w/the above that sandals are sexy (given they are not just blinged up leather strapped flip flops).

I am scared of the ick factor of flip flops, sandals, or high heels to be honest. I've worn flops rarely around cities, but when I do my feet bottoms turn BLACK. GROSS.

Know what's really scary? Having to change shoes in teh gym.

See I think it depends on the foots. I kinda dig flip flops a lot of the time, but they really amplify ugly. On a cute girl they kind of give this "free" feel, like she's just one piece closer to naked and relaxed. Then again, I like t-shirts more than dresses for the same amount of skin exposed.

oh man, I always kept my socks on at the gym. 'd shower when I got home. cuz ew.

I just dont see how a pretty girl can walk out of the house in her fashionable tshirt, a cute cropped jacket, a fun skirt or shorts, and think FLIP FLOPS are going to complete her ensemble. why not cute slip-on shoes? mary janes? SANDALS. ANYTHING but flip flops. and yet I see them all the time, walkin' around the mall, far far from a beach or pool of any kind. it just... the ick factor really gets to me.

sure, I wear slip-on shoes most of the time it is warm, but by golly my feet are encased in a shoe, not flappin' up germs/dirt/who knows what onto my skin.

also, I am in agreement w/you that they reaally amplify ugly. lots.

Definitely flip flops should only be worn around the pool or beach. They're pretty impractical otherwise. Yes, if you have to choose between being barefoot and wearing flips, I'd wear the flips, but if there are any other alternatives (such as sandals, or a nice pair or huaraches (I think that's the spelling)) I'd go with them.

My issue is that I grew up in developing countries, and if you could you DID NOT expose your feet to the stuff on the ground. That kind of imprinting sticks.

I'm with just about everyone else on this. Not sexy. At the absolute best (meaning a good-quality flop on a pretty foot) they're neutral. Flops + hairy toes = eeeyyyyyuuurrrgh.

I also wear crocs...generic ones even.

I think flip flops are sexy and in the summer time when I can barely be bothered to wear shoes at all, they are basically all I wear. I think tennis shoes are pretty gross especially on guys in shorts because unless they have the little anklet socks on they just look stupid (to me), like girls from the 80's with scrunched socks. Don't even get me started on guys who try to salvage the look by wearing black socks. Then again, I'm not bothered by feet. It's not like someone can help what their feet look like. Now if they are scraggly and wrong because of hygiene, well that's a different story.

Oh no...I think I violate your rules! I wear both ankle socks and black socks, even black ankle socks. Problem is high-up socks look dorky - like granddad in brown socks and sandals dorky. How can a boy wear shoes with shorts and not break some fashion senses?

No, I think ankle socks are just about the only socks men should wear with shorts but, yeah not in black though. I can't stand black socks worn casually, that's just a personal preference and probably stems from having to wear dark green knee socks throughout elementary and middle school. Maybe with black shoes it's not so horrible but, I've seen people wear black socks with white shoes and it just looks so strange.

it should be noted that i wore them to the black cat for drinks the other day.

Not sexy. They're designed for the beach, pool and dormitory showers.
They only exception I've found is a pair of chinese silk brocade platform flip-flops. They're not water friendly, and I only wear them with an appropriately matching outfit to someplace like a friends house, never a large social outing.

Sandals are a different story. But anyone wearing sandals (men or women) should go get a pedicure before exposing the rest of the world to your feet. just sayin'.

Depends on how the person wears them. I've seen some stylish footwear that could be called flip flops. I wear clog like sandles which are pretty close to a flip flop (they have heels tho).

I also wore flip flops when we went into the water after Old Rag to protect my feet.

I find flip flops far sexier than Crocs or *shudder-the-absolute-worst* UGGS.

What isn't sexy is folk that end up getting the bottoms of their feet just god awful dirty because of wearing flip flops on and off on concrete.

Flip-flops are ok in public showers and no other place I can think of. Not the pool, not the beach, and certainly not for just walking about.
