Sep. 19th, 2008 10:46 pmThe reason I always said beware the loss of civil liberties under the guise of terrorism fighting was that there was no way these powers would withhold their powers, that they would apply them to any and all laws.
The TSA is checking out airport car x-ray machines. Sounds nifty? They are also scanning for drugs.
The photos show whether explosives or drugs might be in the car.
This is getting more common, as predicted. The powers invoked and expanded under the fear of terrorism are being used for other "crimes."
Add in the fact that the government just mortgaged all of us for over 3 grand a pop, and that virtually the entire banking industry plus all business they finance (hint, any and all business) are now subject to their "transparency" and regulatory control...

Date: 2008-09-20 03:22 pm (UTC)I've also heard comments about our government taking steps that are more of a socialist-type government. Personally, I like how socialist governments put or could put the well-being of the populous before the well-being of the individual. To me, if we had this ethic, we would better address environmental issues (and, honestly, that's my key reason for supporting it).
So, I'm torn. Government control is bad because of abuse like you mentioned, but good because of creating common ethos. I'm torn.
Take financials, as an example:
I don't think executives who mismanaged finances and abused the "free Market" should be bailed out of their fuck up, but I also don't think that the general populous should be hurt by the collapse of AIG because someone else abused their power. Is their a way to bail out the company while punishing the abusers? Oh wait, we could have given them all that $$ under the condition of demanding that those who played the money games are fired, fined, or possibly jailed. In some way, some sort of punishment should have happened. Did it?
(Caveot: I've only heard tidbits about all this. Please forgive my ignorance, if I'm really off base)
