I knew I was in for a rough ride when we hooked up with the peeps...well I wasn't worried when I saw all their uber bike equipment and gear - I'm used to blowing by hikers in $500 with my $10 t-shirt. However, they all had pretty mean-ass calves, and when I saw the guy with a bike gear tattooed onto his calf...I knew I was fucked. Once again we had ice cream midstream, but this time I learned how very far back Kirstin was holding when we biked last time. I kept up so long as they uh...waited. I didn't die, but it was a long hard ride. Dood had bike shit tattooed on his LEG. Wow. He also had a gorgeous house which feels me full of envy, much open kitchen wood floor neat mobiles woodsy yard envy.

How far and what type of terrain?

30-40 miles round trip, almost all flat pavement. I had a 50lb old piece of crap mountain bike with knobby tires - they all had spendy bikes for roads :)

Yeah, I have got to get rid of the knobby tires on my commuter bike. It takes me forever to get home.

40 miles is awesome though. I don't think I've ever gone more than 20 in a day.

Hah. I'm thinking of getting knobby tires for my commuter bike because I'm tired of getting flats. :)

Even the kevlar ones aren't holding up to the mix of construction and storm debris.

Really? Ugh. How hilly is your area? I just cannot build any speed. My husband, the bike enthusiast suggested a new cassette, derailluer, and smoother tires with more air pressure.

I have pretty gentle hills on my commute. I follow 50 through Arlington down to Key Bridge (lots of construction), then the Capitol Crescent trail up to Bethesda (lots of tree debris lately). I also figure I'd rather take a couple minutes longer every day than risk getting a flat (or two) and getting stuck for an hour.
