Sore muskles II

Ha! I did work out despite my 2-day still sore muskles, and it was awesome. Ok, I know you're not supposed to compare, but I'm an idiot and I couldn't help but enjoy that when I went to the squat cage the guy on the squat rack beside me was chuckling to himself when I started my ass-to-the-grass squats with just the bare bar. He was grunting with his 90 deg knee squats with 185. He got quiet when I put the weight to 95, 135, and then the non warm-up wieght of 185. I've only just started back on squats, and this is my first venture into ass-grass squats - so I'm pretty happy that at 185 I went from 8-6-6 a short time ago to 10-10-8 today. That a guy started with a polite subtle chuckle at my weight only to be shown up (and I was about 6" shorter and 50lbs lighter than his stocky ass) later was funny. Sure, for all I know he's working from an injury or just did double that amount and was cooling down, but it was a short-term shallow charge in my day. Not that I could really walk when I was done.
However, when I was hitting those last ones my legs were shaking. I'm used to working to exhaustion on upper body, so I think I'm a pretty decent judge of my abilities and failure points. Still, this is new and far more risky - even with a cage to catch the bar if I get in trouble. Think I should be concerned or back off when I push to shaky-legs? What is a strong sign that I'm about to fail or fall?

Date: 2008-01-24 03:08 pm (UTC)I would say if you're feelin' shakey-legs, that means it is time to cool it for a minute or 2. your muscles are reaching their limits. I asked my trainer about that very thing when my legs were gettin' shakey after a million weighted lunges followed by wall squats w/more weights - he said it's a sign that your muscles aren't used to what you're doing, and they are under stress. he'd have me stay in position [usually w/the wall squats] for a weensy bit when I got shakey, then have me "chill" [aka: stop] for a minute while I shook out and got ready for the next set.
in conclusion, 'd say if you get shakey doing the ass-grass squats, mebbe don't go all the way down on your last set? or, just give yourself a minute to recover, and try again. but if it is consistently shakey, 'd say call it a day and move on to another exercise.
& regardless: good job! woo! [you actually asked a question I was wondering myself, about the "how long should I wait when 'm sore to workout again?" stuffs - thanks for reading my mind!] ;)
