This waking up at 4am shit has got to stop. I keep trying to argue that I shouldn't be feeling stressed, but my sleep patterns and crankiness seem to argue otherwise. Him - I've checked my list and most everything is done. I shouldn't be stressed at all. Her - You're buying a house, duh.

Is turbotax worth it? If you get it from intuit online it's only $50 for the "with deductions and investments" version, but I've already done my taxes. I could pay the money and see if it finds more deductions than me alone. It says you can "try it free" and only pay at the end. Any idea what that means?

heehee, sweet. I'm not the only crazy fuck awake at 5a.m. on a Saturday morn.

I personally hate those tax programs, I'm lazy - I take mine to H&R Block.

I guess I'm not since I do it all by hand. In fact, I've created excel spreadsheets for the past 4 years that sort of compute it, but obviously I'm doing all the work. I'm too cheap for tax preparers.

I fell asleep later.

I like turbotax, but then, I'm also a Quicken user so get some benefit there since it integrates. If you use it a couple years in a row, it will go back and pull up stuff out of your previous years taxes, which saves a bunch of time.

I'm more interested in new info than saving time - especially now when I'm "done." I'm just curious if it will teach me stuff.

The real kicker is now that I'm going to be a slumlord, even if I use it, will it teach me important tricks of accounting to save money on taxes based on the rental investment?

I'm all for tracking stuff with a computer, rather than trying to do it all manually. Pretty sure that Quickbooks will do stuff like print out invoices and the like, which might be helpful in your new profession as slumlord.

And, ya, TT is good about finding deductions and is very nice for checking things when you're done. They also offer some guarantee against audits, as I recall.

Muchly appreciated. I'm going to try it. Hopefully it will tell me how to rent to all-cash illegals who tiptoe and remodel for free (I can only say offensive things like that due to my name, though I will lose my character bar references)

I always used to do mine by hand, and was very skeptical about the turbo tax, but tried it out on the recommendation of my father-in-law. But I've had pretty good experiences with it, especially with the deduction tracker.

So you were me, then you liked it, so perhaps me like it. Harumph. Maybe me like.

They don't charge you until they have everything figured out and its time to file. So you can go through the whole thing and see if they can get you more of a return. I don't imagine they would, though, and it will take an hour or so that you could be using to watch the superbowls.!

You mean grocery shop during the SB?

Huh...well since I already transferred everything to a spreadsheet, it should be fast for me to do. And free. I'll give it a whack if I get a chance.

It means you literally don't pay until you try to print things out or e-file. I have used turbo tax a couple of yeears cause the tax places all charge through the roof and well I hate doing taxes. So yeah you can run the program and see if it fines anything more and then not pay for it if it doesn't.

Thanks! That really helps - can't go wrong with comparing their findings with mine. If it saves me as much as a couple dollars I'll use it just on prinicple - and never spend so many hours on taxes again.

i actually prefer taxcut to turbotax (the program is also available online, and i think they offer the free trial too) - they've done excellent at keeping my deductions inline (student loans, my own business, house/renters, etc) and h&r block will actually send a person out if you're audited after using their software

oh, and i've used both, but taxcut wound up being less annoying and easier after a couple of years of trying both - at the time it was for myself/zooom and i also did the taxes for my former landlord who was an independent contractor with a ton of 1099s and business expenses

Interesting - thank you. Sounds like the cheaper one should win.

I get up completely at around 4 am almost every day. I sure know how hard it is. Do you need to do anything when you get up or are you just not getting enough sleep anymore?

Oh, and next year send your taxes to me and I'll have my grandfather do them. He's an accountant.
