Jul. 2nd, 2006 09:32 pmToday we drove all the fawk way out to nearly-Harrisonburg and hiked 10.5 miles, probably more due to wrong turns. There were some serious uphills, like I was dying and only kept going because I wasn't about to stop before she did (she similarly wasn't going to stop before I did) so we nearly died trying to keep a fast pace regardless of heat, sun, and grade of climb. I got some sun - almost look human! We were untellably funky when we got home, but a shower and Kabob Bazaar later life is good. Oh today was a lose calorie day and then some - more than made up for the Lazy Sundae ice cream from Saturday.
Last night we went to midnight. That's right, I went to midnight. We were going to see Billie do that bellydance thing, and frankly I hadn't been there since before chiaro opened. I won't be going back.
They did improve the place - the rug is gone replaced by stone tile floor, the dance area is larger, and they installed some large screen tvs. They halved the size of drinks while maintaining the price. They painted the place...but in some odd aqua blue it appeared. The music wasn't half bad - very mixed with old and new, goth, synth, and some silliness mixed in. That was all livable.
What was not livable was the crowd. We started at the door when some young girl came screaming out towards a friend, making a scene. I started to laugh - not because it was cute, but because J reared back and almost coldcocked the twit. She held back, alas I had laughed in vain, and we entered. I don't want to pick people out, but suffice to say that the place was filled with an odd assortment of people I did not want to view. They were old, oddly shaped, and poorly dressed - like a series of unmade beds.
It's an odd feeling, almost like I imagine a bully feeling - I see these people and I just want to hit them. The dance floor was the worst - had one of those fake fighting guys, because when you train in the spooky martial arts you need to practice on the dance floor in off-brand goth clubs. It's not my business if they look good to me or not, they aren't hurting anyone, but just seeing them makes me retch. Why? Don't I support geeks in their geekdom, or is it just some types of geeks? Midnight was...full of every stereotype you've heard about from midnight. The number of significantly old people caught me a little off guard. The cake disappeared quickly. It was entertaining in a watching COPS kind of way, but I don't enjoy just mocking people for the sheer sake of it. Sad that they are the offering for Sat night in DC.

Date: 2006-07-03 01:46 am (UTC)Hey! I resemble that remark. ;)
I considered going to Midnight last night, but decided my time was better spent drafting a document and cleaning my bathroom. I think I made the right choice...

Date: 2006-07-03 06:47 pm (UTC)Unfortunately it is the only thing in DC offering goth/industrial music on a Saturday night. There are a lot of things they could do to improve the night and space- I have made some suggestions but as of yet, they've gone undone. This isn't a surprise.
I don't mind stopping by or attending the full night with the awareness that it is NOT Catacomb and nothing like Chiro. For some reason, every time a club starts to close or does (re: Chiro and Alchemy), the Midnight patrons tend to say, "A lot more people will come out," to which I always reply, "No, they won't." It's not the same atmosphere and the feel of these nights is so different it's not even funny. Perhaps it's especially noticeable to us who've been around long enough to remember multiple clubs nights during the week and how we could be assured we'd run into many of the same friends each night. Now, it's nothing like that; sometimes I see people from Alchemy at Midnight, other than Midnight's established regulars, but it's not too often.
Midnight's simply more suited for the typical goth-kid. I don't mean that to be condescending, but sometimes I have to remind myself that almost everyone I know, myself included, went through that awkward phase were we felt it eyeliner was a requirement before going out in our blacker-than-black fishnets and accoutrements. Midnight is kind of the awkward teenager of the scene, to me, but I guess that's why it has the appeal and repulsion it does.

Date: 2006-07-03 04:43 pm (UTC)Let me know either way, if it's a short hike, I can leave her at home. It's the long hikes that I can't do cause no one is here to feed her or walk her ;-)
