Holy shit it was fun going to Nick's last night. I think we lamed the place out, mostly leaving by midnight (you know, us old people have jobs), and the dancers were few in number. Still, I got to get my super-old-school groove on. Uh, no fair playing the blade followed by machines! I was honestly surprised I could bounce right back into my dance style after so long with no dancing whatsoever.

On a very petty note, and I mean very petty and I know better petty, but that guy who does the spinning dance annoys the living fuck out of me. He does nothing on beat whatsoever - just spins around and around with his head tilted back. He might as well be sitting on a swivel chair. You just wanna say "I'm such a pretty ballerina" for him, only the urge to ram a boot through his spinal column is larger. It's not my business, he's not hurting anyone, and for all I know he's a nice and brilliant guy. Yet, looking at him I think he's a twit and want to impale him on wood.

Putz's pics were a real trip down memory lane. Got to see a bunch of Michelle, including one sticking her tongue out of course. Elise appeared many times as did Claudia - I remember watching them for fucking hours. Le sigh. Pics of Kitty and Kangal kissing, much giggling. And I was there with Jen, another strange combination of today and memories. Seeing Jen do some belly wiggle with Jessie was to die and giggle for! The funny thing about looking at the pictures was how accurate my "short-timer" radar always was. The people with all the makeup, who really snubbed others, who cared who the DJ was for status points...all had their phase and moved on to the next big shocker thing. The staff looked about the same, as did the place. It was as though nothing had changed but us.

I got my dance on. Needed that.

Got up this AM, clicked on tv, and woke up to the end of Heaven's burning. Serious mood fuck!

that was fun...

and it was good seeing you - I can't believe that it's been almost a year since I saw you out at a club!

I definitely miss that lower-key club vibe, when we were all just hanging out.

When we could just hang out. Oh, and the club didn't care about revenue because it was really just a front for drug money. When I win, the lottery...

HEY, leave the roxy alone... if you want to talk about fronts for drug money use cagney's as an example.

it was another club, back in the 80s. I don't know if it made it to the 90s or not.

one of my old roommates once threw up on the dance floor at both Traxx and Cagney's on the same night...

i was really just givin' ya shit... but for the record, the ganja smell wasn't "IN" the roxy... it wafted in (though I never smelled anything).

and i'm kinda surprised you aren't familiar with cagney's... i guess that makes me more ancient than even you. now THAT place was a front... it was on the corner of connecticut ave just before dupont (near the cvs). at one point they were supposed to get vip cards, but never did. however, my friends and i were regularly treated like rock stars having whole sections of the club reserved for us. there was one night in particular that an old friend and i were asked to "watch over" the nephew of some gentleman while he was hanging out... i guess we looked menacing with our shaved heads. the reason we had shaved heads is another story involving alcohol, a military installation, a "blinky monster", and the police.

I went to Poseur's in Georgetown, but due to college I missed stuff like Chicago and whatnot. I did come down for the last Poseurs.

He is a nice, brilliant guy. I hope he doesn't get wind of this--it would probably be a huge blow to the confidence it takes to let loose and be blissful for a few moments every week in what really does amount to just some fairly innocuous self-expression. I think it's cruel to take that away from someone, and your critique - while you have every right to give it - makes me sad.

I don't know they guy. Perhaps a friend could let him know, gently, how he might appear to others. Maybe he doesn't care. Maybe he does and doesn't know. Dunno.

From: [identity profile] entropicalia.livejournal.com
Well, he's not hurting anyone and it makes him happy, so why ruin that?

I mean, I'm aware that my own dancing is a little bit nutty, but it's just such a great release that I really couldn't give a shit. But if someone came up and told me I looked nutty? I'd be shattered for a while, and probably stay away from the dance floor, and that would be so sad and unnecessary.

People, friends, have told me when I acted obnoxious, danced horribly, wore my hair in a bad way (ie John Basedow), dressed poorly, and smelled. The people that told me that were friends.

He's not on my f-list and probably doesn't come here. Only reason he would was if a friend told him. He'd hardly be the first person I mocked, nor the last, and I take my fair share as well.

That's fair. And it's your journal and I really won't begrudge you your opinions, it just makes me cringe a little when people I care about are openly mocked.

My only concern is whether or not somebody KNOWS they look foolish. I'm fully aware that on the rare occasions I dance, I look rather absurd, and I'm fine with that. I just worry for the people who don't realize. Hell, looking at the pictures from last night, I wish people had warned me off a couple of wardrobe choices...

agreed...I always thought that Jason Bradford looked rather ungainly and silly on the dance floor, til I saw a video of me dancing...hehe! *I* looked silly...didn't bother me much though, I still love to dance.

Jose, I wholeheartedly agree with you...I make fun of people all the time! You should see some of the silliness at The Castle here in Tampa. I see tons of people who remind me of the anagrams that are old DC folk and some that just are absurd. For those who are on MySpace, look up The Senator. He reminds me of Rowdy Roddy Piper in lingerie. No, not in a kilt! I AM fucking Scottish myself! But this guy wears lingerie, gets drunk as shit, and sometimes gets naked. He is a fixture there though. No real comparison in the old DC scene that I can think of. I also agree that you sometimes need to look silly, if you are just cutting loose and going with the music. One move, such as spinning in place, however, does not qualify as dancing. Who was it years back who was going off about people with only one move? Hell, mighta been Jose! ;)

Of the ten or twenty times I went out dancing in Germany, the only time anyone spoke to me was to tell me "You dance kind of funny". I had no idea what to do with that.

You do dance kind of funny, though it's pretty fittin-in around here. I like the way you dance funny!

I also dance funny, though not as many people make fun of me now for the "boxing dance." Last night I dug up the old kicking-punching Roxy dance. I'm fighting air!!!

dancing is like fucking. Unless you are a professional, have the appropriate music and lighting, clothing, etc....we ALL look stupid doing it ;-)

I've laughed and mocked pretty much everyones dancing, especially my own dancing skillz. But I don't see the point in telling someone based solely on how one person thinks they appear.

If I think you appear as a boxer-wanna-be, what then? You change to look less so. Then someone else tells you OMG you are dancing so gay now and as if you have no energy. Then what do you do? Change it up again?

heehee, i think i have seen the spinning guy. if it's the guy i'm thinking of he never really bothered me, except that whenever somebody dancing near me is dancing to some song that's just in their head and not even approximating the actual beat, it really throws me off. you never know which way they'll go, what they're going to do. i tend to bump into them, or they into me, and then i have to pause and trace the song for a bit, basically start all over again to get where i was.
