This is the perfect time! Just follow them at a distance with a high-powered rifle, and make sure there are white vans around when you pick them off in a parking lot! Sure the cops will know it was a different gun, but your odds are better of looking like a copycat criminal rather than a motivated social engineer!

Perhaps not the best thing to be saying in public, but as long as you're using SOMETHING in 5.56 NATO and some sort of soft-tipped round which is prone to fragment, it is unlikely they'd even realize it wasn't the same gun, especially considering this is a police force that can't tell a mini-van from a box truck. Ballistic fingerprinting is not an xact science, especially when they don't have the gun. Just police up your brass...
