I used to go to a video game message board, but it closed recently. Looking up "ghetto prom" pictures, I ran into a link from this white supremacist site: http://www.stormfront.org/forum which uses the same software and color scheme. That is just beyond creepy.

I have new neighbors and I hate them. I haven't met them yet, but one of them drives a saturn that says "LUV GOP." I don't mind that so much as the smoke. They must chain smoke, but even so...somehow their cigarette smoke is wafting into my apartment. Whenver the heat comes on I get cigarette smoke blowing into my unit. I can't block all the holes - already paid someone to try. I'd have to have the ceiling removed, holes blocked, and rebuild. I may just have to beat the shit out of them or something. Ugh...its' really bad because I can't even be mad at them - it's 100% their right to smoke in their apt! How can I not be in a smokey apt w/o stomping on their rights?

This is a challenging problem, but I can offer a couple of semi-solutions. Won't fix the problem all the way (only them quitting or moving will, unfortunately) but it might alleviate some of the yucky smell.

Go to any cigar shop. These places tend to sell candles that are specifically designed to help cancel out the odor created by tobacco products. Now, this will stick you with another smell, but it can't be worse than the smoke. They come in a variety of scents.

The second option is MUCH more expensive, but healthier in the long run. Get a really good air filter and put it under/over one of the more prominent air vents or near the door. The best one on the market is the Ionic Breeze by Sharper Image, but there are a number of cheaper knockoffs. Try Amazon or Target.

It's a shame about the LUV GOP thing. I mean, the smoke you can cover up or filter out. Annoying opinions are tougher to ignore when shoved in your face.

I have a huge expensive air filter - but the problem is the exposure in the first place. Good suggestions though.

Oh they're probably going to be more offended by me than I by them.

Nuts, I was going to suggest the Ionic breeze at sharper image too - my friend had several in his apartment (for when people smoked at his parties), and it worked great.

As a smoker even, I empathize...I hate the smell of smoke in my house or car. It's awful trying to sleep with with the smell....

Er, I'm a huge consumer reports fan and they swear up and down those things don't work. They even show pictures of them shoving them in closed containers and not affecting the air at all. They even tried blowing the air on it with a fan but it didn't work.

I've heard from friends who swear by the thing, but I trust CR. I bought the thing they recommended...a friedrich (I'm iffy on the name) air filter. It's a similar theme, only it has a fan, is huge, and according to them is more effective.

you're right, they don't work... and until recently also had ozone issues.

There is this alternate universe where some people are people, some people are vampires, but everybody gets along, and you are a vampire, and the neighbors who just moved in aren't chain-smoking republicans, they are actually Italians or Viet or something, and your post above just went: "I may just have to juice them dry or something. Ugh...its' really bad because I can't even be mad at them - it's 100% their right to cook with garlic in their apt! How can I not be in a garlicky apt w/o stomping on their rights?

That is absolutely disgusting. There's no nice way to bring up the subject to your neighbors, so you're on your own. I've heard that air filters are fabulous, but I stick to hosing down my clothes with Febreeze or pure vodka to get rid of the smell.

Attempts to counteract the cigarette odor by cooking chocolate truffles and roasted-vegetable-and-chevre pizza produce mixed, though tasty, results.

That is creeeeeepy. But the video game message board in question was using the default forum logo, not a custom white supremacy logo.

Scroll down to the bottom, they have some thing that claims they are one of the biggest boards in the world. Should we be concerned?

In a word, no. The claims of nutjobs are not worthy of comment. Dr. Gene Scott on the other hand, now that's some math to compute!

You should find some way to produce an even MORE horrific odor in your apartment, thereby forcing THEM to pay to plug up the holes.

Of course, I think you're being prissy. A little stink never hurt anyone. I can smell everything my neighbors cook, and often the gas-station across the street.

It's more about the fact taht it is smoke than the smell. Stink is one thing, getting lung cancer is another. I'm not smoking!

You cannot even remotely get lung cancer from that level of exposure. The only evidence that environmental tobacco smoke increases risk of ANY chronic disease is among those who live with smokers or work in smokey environments, and even then the link to cancer is very tenuous. You will NOT get sick from incidental exposure. If incidental exposure caused lung-cancer, EVERYONE alive before the 1970's would have lung cancer, wouldn't they?

So you are indeed being prissy.
