Happy Día de los Reyes (Three Kings Day). El Día de los Reyes is celebrated on January 6th, twelve days after Christmas. It is often viewed as the last day of the Christmas season (the end of the 12 days of Christmas). According to this myth, 3 Kings (Melchior, Caspar the friendly king, and Balthazar) arrived and hit the beebee jebus with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. It seems the Kings were not familiar with babies or what sort of items they might enjoy. This myth only appears in one of the books and is more than a little unlikely, but hey it's just a holiday. Giving presents makes far more sense today than on 12/25 though - the story actually has gift giving in it. So enjoy your 12th day of giftmas.

Growing up in my home we put up a tree in December, but wouldn't decorate it until xmas eve. When I was old enough, I was given the great honor of sawing off the bottom to give it a fresh surface to absorb water. The end piece was used as a great outdoor chew toy for one of our dogs. I'll never forget the year we had the tree by the sliding glass door, and our dog blackie (a black dog!) used to scratch when he needed to go out. He got to the door, and must have noticed the pine tree inside. True to his nature, he relieved himself and marked the tree as "his." Happily this occurred early, before the lights were strung on the tree. Much giggling and some clean-up ensued. Our tree remained up until at least 1/6. I like hybrid holidays. I still have my blinky lights in the windows, but after today they will come down. In theory.

My mom uses the nativity scene that she puts up every year to illustrate the whole birth story up to the arrival of the three kings. We would decorate for Christmas the week before, the nativity had all the little figures but the baby Jesus and the kings. The kings would be across the room and each day they'd move a little closer to the manger. (I guess they'll finish their little trip today.) The baby Jesus would be in the manger when we got up on Christmas morning. After I moved out, I still came home to spend Christmas morning with my parents. About ten years ago, I got there and baby Jesus wasn't in the manger. I pointed this out to Mom and she said "Oh, he's under the couch." That's when I learned that for all my life, for one week of the year, the baby Jesus lives under the Dobson's couch. Now I know that mom's finished her Christmas decorating when she calls and tells me that Jesus is under the couch.
