It was an odd weekend for me, emotionally. Trying to soothe desires and discomforts with alcohol did not turn out to be a terribly effective strategy.

Kel and I found the strangest trail last night. Since I had a daytime appt., we decided to convert our trek to the hills hike to a local one. I actually had planned to haul us to Roosevelt island, but after parking in the lot we walked the other way into the woods. I was shocked - lived right here for years and never knew these things were here. There were some seriously fun things to see along the way:
A giant green-covered depression in the hill leading up to the GW parkway. It looked like like the entrance to land of the lost.
unexplained (fuel?) storage tanks and generators from perhaps the early 1900s. These could be great shelters when zombies overrun the capital.
a giant rock wall which was fenced off because it was unstable and pieces were sliding down the mountain. We climbed it anyway, and on the way back saw an old woman making the rocky scale.
Tons of hispanics fishing in the river. I'm tempted to say ew, especially remembering the Haine's point walk where we saw all the used condoms in the river but ultimately the fish we eat is getting all this gunky water somehow I suppose. Why does the ocean just seem cleaner?
The sad thing was seeing all the english ivy and kudzo. Invasive vine species are doing so well that in the next 50 years or so there might not be any trees left at all.

The hike was surprisingly fun, with lots of mixed terrain and rocks to climb over. If anyone is interested in the hiking experience but finds it a daunting task to haul 1.5 hours into the hills to brave the bears and hillbillies, I recommend this hike. If you keep a 3-4 mile an hour pace you will get a decent workout, and it's really easy to start. I think you could be cell-phone covered the entire time - I want to say the trail was marked as going to Chain Bridge but I'm not sure.

We never made it to the island. We never do.

In a rare note, I had a fun dream last night. Chalk that up to spicy Thai food chased with a Maggie Moos ice cream fudge brownie sundae? I was in an art museum where there were all these ornate wooden frames on the ground, each with a nude human figure either in it, next to it, or draped across it. All the figures were shaved (I don't know if they had head-hair or not). As I walked by one the figure moved - it was a friend of mine. People in the area looked over, and she explained she had been sitting there all day, it was a weekend, and she felt her arty-duty was done. We walked off talking.
