MARCH FOR FREEDOM
Today they are holding the FREEDOM MARCH. Yeah! Rock on, go Freedom! Go Liberty!
Just note that:
-You had to pre-register before September 9 to participate.
-The route is fenced off, as is the country-music concert.
-The press is not allowed. Nothings says American Freedom like preventing press coverage.
-The country singer will be singing "Iraq and roll," you know...because of all the 9/11 terrorists from Iraq
-Anyone showing up and trying to participate that did not pre-register will be arrested. The full Capital -Police force will be patrolling to ensure compliance and enforcement against dissidents.
-The march is both a memorial to those who died on 9/11, and a showing of support for the military (they mean support as in pro-war). Nice how they mixed those.

9/11 still means a lot to me, but this nonsense pisses me the fuck off.
EDIT - Don't fall into the 9/11 - Katrina trap of telling everyone how you feel about the events.
Watching each and every politician bleed their "heart" out in public, talking about how impacted they were by the images on their tele, rather than funding the programs, taking action etc...has burned lots of people out. No one cares how you feel, how you were impacted. Perhaps if you were there on 9/11 (not near, not a mile away like me, not ten miles away) or have property in NOLA you can talk. Otherwise, you're just a viewer and it's rude to piggy-back to display your feelings.

Date: 2005-09-11 02:46 pm (UTC)As for the parade - c'mon - real voice of the people (tm) here in DC? (ok, there in DC.) Of course not...this is all a media opp and a chance for us to recenter the message the way we want to. That said...if people really wanted to stage a protest, then they would set it up in Arlington County (fairly liberal) or Takoma Park, MD. If a big festival or protest was arranged, the media would come.

Date: 2005-09-11 02:52 pm (UTC)I'm tired of protests. We've had some of the largest in history recently, and all for naught. It's a street party, and no one in their right mind can think such action makes a difference.
Bush is at his lowest rating ever - 40%. Who are these 40%?

Date: 2005-09-11 08:16 pm (UTC)You want a big 12x18 print of Rumsfeld and Clint Black on stage together? I got a whole bunch of those ;)

Date: 2005-09-12 11:23 am (UTC)I was there, it was laid back, there was a bag check area (like in any of the museums) but no metal detectors or cops walking around with dogs - I walked right past all the security with three huge black bags hanging over my shoulders without them doing anything but looking at my pass. There was media all over the walk route so the idea of keeping the press limited to a specific three areas wasn't true. And the report of there being "several hundred police officers on the scene"... well, there were cops, but that makes it sound like they were in riot gear ready to rumble. A couple hundred maybe - tops - but several? no way.

Country music, multiple mentions of Jesus and God, and Donald Rumsfeld - what a way to spend a Sunday afternoon. (I was only there because I was working, please don't think otherwise!) ;)

Date: 2005-09-12 11:43 am (UTC)The link is banned by my work - identified as potentially offensive material. Not unusual, many thinks are similarly blocked. Appreciate the offer, but I must admit my interest in watching Country folk, Jebus fok, Rumsfeld, and using the 9/11 disaster to push unrelated political agendas doesn't interest me greatly (other than cutting into to my "ready to be offended" nerve).
Who do you work for that you had to cover this event?

Date: 2005-09-12 10:05 pm (UTC)I have little/no interest in those topics either, (okay, absolutely none) but being hired by the event to cover said event makes me take photos of what they tell me. Even if I don't like what I see. But the photos show that the crowd wasn't that huge (not as big as projected), very White, and that while there was a security presence it was no where near what was expected from the news stories.
yeah, I'm all banned, damn nuddie pics get me on all the Forbidden lists. Wonder what Rumsfeld would think see his photos up on my site. WAit, I think I can hear the HOmeland Security folks knocking on (down) my door now.
