I think I’m going to give more. I gave money to red cross, might again, but does anyone know a non-religious or politically conservative etc. group that is providing aide? Salvation Army I recall is anti-gay, and I’m a little funny on some red cross policies, but I’m ok with red cross overall - especially when the priorities have shifted like today.

My questions is becoming whether the NOLA citizen conduct is awful, or if we are getting a non-representative sample of conduct in videos. How bad is it? How many rapes, robberies, shots fired at rescue workers (were they)? I wonder if the news is focusing on the horror, because we all watch horrible things, vs. how much there is.

I was wrong again - the international reaction is one of support and aide. I still don’t feel like the only world superpower and richest nation in the world needs it - we have the money, food, doctors…it’s just a question of using logistics to get the right things there now. Internationally we look awful - best quote I ran into was comparing us to the tsunamis.

Best quotes: "Anarchy in the USA" declared Britain's best-selling newspaper The Sun.
"I am absolutely disgusted. After the tsunami our people, even the ones who lost everything, wanted to help the others who were suffering," said Sajeewa Chinthaka, 36, as he watched a cricket match in Colombo, Sri Lanka. "Not a single tourist caught in the tsunami was mugged. Now with all this happening in the U.S. we can easily see where the civilized part of the world's population is."

The Mayor of NO rocks.

I can’t believe in this superpower we are so inept at fixing these problems. It’s a flood - but why is it taking so long to get food and water to people? Why not just bomb it from planes like we did in Afghanistan? I understand aggravation with people who chose to stay in the city when they had other options, but for those who appropriately chose the shelter the situation is just absurd - did they not expect that people would need food, water, and bathroom facilities? Why can’t they feed them in those locations?

“Bush cut his vacation short…” “Bush asked people to conserve gas…” You’ve got to be kidding.

The conduct of many citizens left in New Orleans may be pretty awful at this point; once you think that people are going to be shooting at you, you tend to lower your standards of conduct.

But I also think we're getting a misrepresentation; we're not hearing about the conduct of the people who got out, and we're not seeing the conduct of people who are hiding in their homes. By definition, we're only seeing the people who are marauders. Everyone else is invisible to cameras.

Also, hasn't Sri Lanka been engaged in a civil war for years now? Coz' that's really so much more civilized than this. Fuck Sajeewa Chinthaka.

We're morons and savages, but I'll be damned if I think we're more moronic or savage than the rest of the human race. (Wow. That's great praise, innt?)

the national news sucks

I've been watching the local news since monday and have been in contact with a bunch of the freaks that are still in town. The Quarter barely flooded, there are bars open, people are helping each other out where they can. Also itlooks like about half of the "louting" pics were actualy give aways sanctioned by the store chains (target, walmart and A&P to name a few). The stores gave the local authoritioes to give out the food, water and medicine. Also, under martial law the authorities have the right to break into plaes for emergency supplies as they did in several suburban pharmicies.

Now the idiots with plasma tvs are another story... Where are you goingto plug it in idiot?

There's a link to the local streaming video on my LJ from OMonday. (it is TV news so it's still a little too sensational, but better than National news.)

Yep, it's making me incredilby stressed to not be able to help. But they really don't need anymore people to try to feed and shelter right now.

What about Habitat for Humanity? (www.habitat.org)

Networkforgood.org and give.org have a large listing of charities that are helping folks.

And I'm with you on your observations.

i read a post on some LJ by somebody there, apparently it's not all raping and looting, there are people brining water to others, sharing food, checking on the sick people, etc.
