I WAS WRONG about volunteer efforts for NOLA. If you have no bling but do have time, http://www.arlingtonredcross.org/ has a link to training for volunteer efforts.

This is a good article about funding for the repair of the flood control systems around NOLA.

I particularly like it because it's very balanced - it includes the accusations that the Bush administration underfunded the program, but notes that all programs outside of the Iraq war faced similar cuts. The Bush admin proposed very low funding for the project, but congress bumped it up. They point out that the underfunding has been taking place for years, and even if they fully funded to the levels requested the work would not have been completed before this event.

This NOLA madness is a good counter-argument to people who still rant about anarchy. There it is! Like it? See how individuals then groups of guys with guns take over, leading to warlords and militaristic consolidation of power? There are no skateboards after anarchy...

Nation kinda blew last night. I did, however, have my ass handed to me on a platter by the lovely [personal profile] anarcha. While I did some foolish things, she did many more foolish things that I am certain I can't do. Neat. At least now I understand one pop-n-lock move. I still feel like going to Bound and doing one-handed push-ups on the bar. Pride? Fuck pride... I did relearn that dancing is so much easier when you were shoes rather than clunky boots. I felt like I was on air, and nothing hurts today. I didn't get inspired to dance to much though, and I fear I may be allergic to yarn.

Of course drinking solved all the problems related to my crappy law school experience. Alcohol fixes everything! This is why god gave us alcohol, to fix things. Single-celled creatures die in their own waste, and we drink the resulting stew because it makes us feel good. Intelligent design - I'm convinced.

Irony overload in the titty bar. Damn you [personal profile] kelowna for noticing.

I cannot ignore the irony of Bush asking people to conserve gas.

This AM I got my ratings and comments from the training in WV. The person who requested me and subsequently sung me accolades wasn't kidding - I got many nice comments and high ratings! I'm more pleased by that than I expected. I feel bad though - there were several negative comments about my co-presenter. He wasn't a great speaker, but he knew his material and really cared about getting it to his audience.

(I keep editing this post as things pop to mind)

Anarchy is like a highly radioactive element. It immediately breaks down into baser forms.

I'm happy to see that all of the trainings are already filled, thus
'enough' people are willing to (also) use their hands in stead of just their wallet (not that there's anything wrong with that).
After I graduate (medicine) I'd like to volunteer for these kind of situations; after the tsunami's and now again I've been aching to do something that actually matters. Like you said, no bling, but enough imput.

I really feel for everybody involved in the Katrina-thing, it is something
I can relate to for a liiiiiittle bit since I also live a few feet below
sealevel. Hopefully things will change for the better - fast.
