"You see! We may not agree on many points, but it takes someone we all despise to galvanize our dislikes so we band together to form an ugly mob. Go hate!"
I have a lot of problems with "us," but my hatred for "them" is greater. Try as I might to be rational, I cannot help but to have that reaction. Empathy has negative aspects too.
Why today...it has to be someone's today. Now it's many more people's today.
My first impulses are not to give up freedoms, but the desire to lash out is strong.
The practical side of me notes while this is psychologically significant, that on an economic scale it's nothing at all. It's a mosquito, a gnat that buzzes around humanity.
