Neat. Last night I couldn't make up my mind about what to do for the longest time, but I finally settled on hitting Taint (DC 9) then Avalanche. Taint was weird for me, nice-weird but weird. I can't remember the last time I went to a gay event of any kind, so I knew that I'd know no-one or almost no-one. I arrived early and was very in the mood for the bar. Before I could get a drink, I was accosted by a nice nerd-chique girl who loved my TKK shirt! Then her husband also commented, and we broke into this conversation about TKK, WUST, 9:30, old 9:30 and so on. I liked his batz maru t and said as much, and the night was off to an unexpected social start. Their friend lamented that they didn't have a t-shirt on at all, though I noted on the positive side that he had fashionably dressed in layers. There was much giggling.

Having been treated so nicely (I'm sorry but when you're alone you really appreciate people that initiate and say hello) I walked up and talked to uh...gay me. This guy looked like me, uh, only gay (and not as hot, poor fella). I cannot tell you the lack of interest I have in gay guys right now, but I saw him standing alone looking (to me) slightly uncomfortable and decided to approach and say hello. Well, unlike me he seemed clearly on the prowl. I don't know why, but I was really curious to see what the game was. I approached and was nerdy, said hello and started to talk about the scheduled act. He was clearly very skilled socially in the scene - he asked perfectly innocuous questions and followed up with probes on answers. He also read my lack of uh...pursuit (I'm guessing here) and after some minor conversation subtly changed his body language to send the signal "not with him" language to anyone who might be looking. I lost him when we hit the bar and I wound up with the geek-chique set again as they talked about 8-tracks and victrollas - the married couple was talking about where to get butt-cheap 78s.

I was fascinated with the guy, no real reason, but I was just so curious to see how the interaction was supposed to go. I sort of played along, not artificially, but wholly curious because I wanted to see how this whole meet-greet interaction went. I'm such a dork! The crowd picked up, and I was far more comfortable with the nerdy set and kept yapping with them until the place started to get a little packed for my taste. I decided to head to avalanche, only then did I run into Tony and then Sarah's former neighbor on the way out the door.

General note - say hello to dorks in clubs. It's really nice to have someone initiate when you're the odd man out. Once upon a time I introduced myself and my girl to Sakiko under similar circumstances, and she's still a friend :)

Avalanche was sort of interesting, but mostly dead. I knew all of two people there, and did not like circling the 4 block radius failing to find parking. I literally saw more people I knew parking and walking than in the club (ganking Kangal's parking spot or I might have given up and gone home). I loved the music there, but by that hour kind of enjoyed just sitting alone and feeling odd-out again. I watched my favorite people candy, the wh00-girls and the Stevie Nicks dancing girl with the nerdy guy. I was rather happy for the nerdy guy - she did a really on-cue Stevie Nicks dance which wasn't really genre appropriate, but screamed "I know my body and am a good lay." The guy she was with had a dance that screamed "I'm clueless but trying to keep up with her, good thing I'm drunk." I was just thrilled that she gave a shit less about his lack of dance skills and dork-boy was going to totally get some that night. I was like a nerdy cheerleader in my mind.

So yeah this post is full of nothing but type-casts and first impressions - the point. Remember Vicar is just short for vicarious sometimes.

Yeah, that was a pretty good arrangement, we should do that every time we go clubbing. Your turn to get there early next time ;)

I'm glad you at least stopped by. I ended up wanting to go home at 1am mainly because of lack of queer friends and it was a bit too crowed to try to strike up random conversations. Perhaps I would have had I gotten there earlier like you did. Glad you had a good time, though.
