I wasn't going to post about the pope because I didn't care.

Ok, so he was Hitler Youth - he has changed a bit since then. It's not fair to just pick on the fact he was a nazi - he wasn't the most enthusiastic and at the time in that location it was hard not to be. I would bitch more about his current stances than how he grew up. He is clearly more conservative than the former pope. Many catholics are upset by this. I don't like catholicism, so I think this pope might be a good thing. The church is losing members, and the vast majority of people that I know seem to say they're catholic while disagreeing with the church. There have been more organized groups protesting the church and their outdated views. I hear people complaining about this pope - I welcome him. I welcome him because I expect people to turn even further away from the church. I welcome him because he is a symptom of a classic defense mechanism - as the world passes the church by, some organizations are dynamic enough to change gears and catch up - but the church is clinging to the past and getting left behind. Rather than face the change, they're circling the wagons while the savages circle them. They feel secure inside their walls, but rather than safe they're merely dying a slow sheltered death. Perhaps this church will become so factioned that we'll see another split...isn't that where the protestants came from?

Don't like the new boss? Same as the old boss? Here, have some Who lyrics:

A friend of mine who grew up in the same parish as I did IMed me two minutes after he walked out onto the balcony: "So... wanna switch to Buddhism?"

I, personally, have no affiliation with the Catholic Church, and even I'm extremely unhappy about Ratzinger's election. Even his new name is rather-foreboding. What's next - Pope Boniface IX?
