Ground control to Major Tom

Last night I stayed up until midnight reading 1-L, and only realized around 11:00 PM that the book was written in the 70s. Way to go Mr. Attention-to-detail. It was interesting enough to read, but irony is a funny Mistress: I didn't check the mail while I was so engrossed. This morning I got up and I had rejection letters from both Harvard and NorthWestern. Technically NorthWestern said I'm on a waiting list, but they say I'll be reconsidered in June. Given the timelines I have to let other schools know my decision by it may as well be an outright rejection. Still, I'm proud that I was close in the running. Michigan remains my highest acceptance - and I may send them a letter to let them know how much I am tempted to go there despite the economics involved.
I was going to post about that this morning, but I checked my email before livejournal and saw a 4 minute old news blip about losing contact with a shuttle. Soon I was blowing my morning watching CNN like it was 9/11. I missed the opportunity to vote in the make-up election since the bizarre aneurysm death of the last guy I voted for. Technically this event doesn't affect me directly, but I rather like space exploration and feel hurt that this disaster happened. It's the risk you accept but never expect, as lucky as the program has been overall. The weirdest thing was the timing in the gym: after boxing I went downstairs to lift. CNN was on, as were the usual music videos. The current disk in play has an OLD Bowie video of Space Odessy (Major Tom). Watching Bowie play ground control and Major Tom (with really funny looking teeth) side by side with a broadcast of video on CNN of the fiery wreckage was just eerie. If I still got high, this would be a bong-hit kinda thing.
