Waking up for no reason sucks far less thanks to adult swim. The only odd thing in the midst of wolves and witch hunters are the country love songs and xtian rock ads. I love adult swim, but worry that it won't be around for long. There are few ads and very few high-dollar ads on the program. If the only people marketing to it are freaks preying on the lonely, then it's doomed. How can I support their programming - buy xtain rock? Life insurance?

Clubs face this issue. With cheap covers and people that don't spend money at the bar, it's hard to keep a night going. I love it when people argue about the dance floor being packed - so what? How much money does that produce? I used to be poor, and got free drinks and soforth. Now I spend money just to spend money - so the night will be there next week. If I'm not drinking, I'll buy for someone else. This is also why I go to non-chain restaurants so much, and blow money and overtip there. Cheesecake factory does not need your money, but perhaps the Yang family does.

Whenever you enjoy something, think about what it takes to keep that thing in motion. Money is always involved, and if you do not contribute then you're just a parasite.

That's a really good point. Even though I'm cutting back on the drinking at the beginning of the new year I still be buying 6 or 7 red bulls or sodas a night. I don't mind so much if some people parasite as long as enough don't to keep things going.

With long term scene folk like we have here, you could argue for a generational effect of parasites. Squatters and money-poor kids could scarf away, while those of us who kinda made it can kick down.

It's easy to spend money in a club once you realize that the name-brand liquor equates to FAR less hangover time the next day. Beware the plastic bottle o' booze! She is NOT your friend...

I wonder if the markup on a $2 Coke is bigger than the markup on booze though...

I find the coke is more expensive when you're doing it off of a stripper's ass though...

Yep, I have no probelm in the donation department. Having the nights I love is easily worth the cash I spend.

That's a very good point, and one I rarely see mentioned...

OH NOES C-SPAN IS GOING TO END 4 EVAR BECAUSE THERE ARE NO ADS!!!!!1111!!!!!eleven

* Cable TV, like network TV, can funnel some of the revenue between shows. If there is a lot of ad revenue for prime time shows, some of that money can be reallocated for late night. Broadcast TV can do this too, but since their margins are lower, they do it in the other direction; a lot of the paid programming between midnight and 6AM goes to fund Everybody Loves Raymond and other drivel.

* Cable TV is partially subsidized by advertising revenues and partially by (you guessed it) subscription fees. This is how you can have networks with no ads (C-SPAN, C-SPAN2), no variety (Food network, Animal planet) or no brain (Oxygen, Spike, Lifetime)

* Remember, Cartoon Network is part of the Turner umbrella (CNN, TBS, TNT, ... ); the "adult swim" block expands their mindshare.

I spend money when I have money, but I am picky about what I support. TV is generally not one of the things I support. Good music is.
