Ugh - it turns out I taxed myself out. I'm too burned out to study right now...and I'm not enjoying my new game DOOM3. I need a joystick I think.

As much as I'd like to say dumb rednecks and zealous xtians voted Bush in, scaring me out of caring about the country as they don't represent my culture - this link (stolen from I forget who?!) shows that in Ohio the education rate of Kerry supporters was LOWER than Bushians.

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/OH/P/00/epolls.0.html Take the time to see it state by state if you like, I'm going back to bed.

Makes sense. Most of the Kerry voters were probably blue collar union guys. Education does not always equal intelligence.

I'm not sure how much I'd care to use a formal education metric to evaluate intelligence.

A lot of people go to college because it's what everyone else does. Conversely, h.s. and college drop-outs are not merely comprised of slarckerish potheads, but also of intelligent people that can't force themselves into the rigid mold of institutionalized education.

enh. who knows.

I don't know how DOOM3 differs from the first one, but I think I had an advantage over my friends who played because I used the keyboard. Unless maybe you get one of the high-end joysticks. Theirs didn't let them step left/right while facing forward, and I didn't have to remove hands from the joystick to do other commands on the keyboard (change weapons and such).

All of those numbers are bsed on exit polls, and the election itself is quite a testamant to how accurate those are.

Being in college (still) I have to second the 'education doesn't equal intelligence' thing. I have always been amazed by how much stupider lots of people get when they learn some trivia. One intro to psych class, 2 or 3 non-western civ classes, one gay floormate, and the average American college student is convinced that they're well-rounded, open-minded, progressive individual with a truely deep understanding of the rest of the world. Toss in a misguided conviction to some random social cause, and they're determined to spread democracy, air-conditioning, and sexual liberation across the globe.

Well I don't know that I'd object to their mission. I might be one of those misguided folks :(

There's nothing wrong with good intentions. Unfortunately, self-righteously trying to spread your values into every tiny poor African village doesn't really help people with no running water or access to basic medical care. Protesting the World Bank is perfectly noble, but dumb if you can't actually explain why it's bad, or what should be done instead.

Some of this really depends on the school you go to I think. I have heard that some universities have really active and knowledgable student bodies, whereas others will get behind a cause for a year or two, listen to Bob Marley, smoke pot, and then clean up and turn into a Republican in time to graduate.

Well yeah, I'm not into the 'forgive debt' movement. It is refreshing to see that even the left grabs at thoughtless short-term solutions that would create havoc if implemented.

We have the term neocon, how do we describe moronic left? I mean hippies is kind of old, and only applies if they smell.

I used to call them neo-hippies. But I think a more accurate label is poseur. Kids like that are involved for the exact same reason that they binge drink at parties. Because it's what you have to do in college, to get the whole experience. Because they're worried that the cute girl that likes Ani DeFranco won't like them unless they have an Earth Day button, and they won't get into the coolest frat if they don't drink until they puke.

If you look at the overall national results, though, they pretty much exactly mirror the popular vote, with bush getting ~51% of every every educational group, Kerry getting ~47%. The only exception was people with postgraduate degrees, who went overwhelmingly for Kerry. I'd be dubious of any exit polls from Ohio, though, since they also showed Kerry winning by a good margin.

It's no fun alone, or not as fun.
