By the time you got there it was a semi-empty warehouse. Ego Likeness was good and specific DJs had some good portions of their sets. By about 10pm though...well...this was the first time I went on the 4th and it is likely the last. No specific bitch - just too empty.
Last year was a blast. I had talked about how far down alchemy had descended...but that was in quality of who was there and what was played. This was just...empty (with eh music).
It's still one of the biggest nights in DC numbers and length of time open, it's just not working for me anymore. Perhaps mixing a grill, club, and live show was what didn't work. Sorry I missed Ego Likeness but I know I'll see them at cherry's tool soon.
I was going to go, but I was too lazy. My bed and the couch felt much more comfortable; however, I did miss out of seeing many good friendly faces and the fireworks. :( I just had too much going on at school to come out for the 4th, however, I did watch people light their fireworks a block from my house while waiting for some explosions that never happened. lol
to see Steve Archer in a live band? I think he's come a long way as a DJ, but he's never going to be a good musician, and I have disliked all his live bands.
I just can't bring myself to pay that much for an alchemy type event. I only go to the club to see people, or the occaisional noise show, but it's just not been my scene for a while now. But I can't really talk as I payed that much several times to go to bottle rocket as my fourth festivities. But dude..they had a moon bounce! I was hopeless to resist it's bouncy power.
I'm a firm believer in the idea that adding a moon bounce to most occaisions will make that occaision better. I also really like those rooms at chucky cheese that are filled with balls. Sadly they keep telling me that I am too big to play there now. Damn the man.
I wasn't able to go since I had to work at 5am. I did have my doubts due to weather, it being on a Sunday night, and since it was a holiday, I figured alot of "gawkers" would be out to stare at the freaks. Just empty? Or was the music and mood bad too???
The mood was fine...well except for the fact that most people seemed to be wandering about going "Wow, an empty room." I only heard one song I liked, and that was on my way out the door - and it was a stoopid remix of a song.
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT TO DJs: We, the cover-paying public, don't like remixes. We like the song we...like. We heard it, we liked it, we danced to it, and so on. We don't like taking that same song and sticking it through a blender. We don't like hearing the song, going to the dance-floor, only to find that we have been duped into...the dance mix.
Um, the music kinda blew. I dunno, maybe bands, club djs, and a bbq don't mix? It wasn't bad, just...empty. There were no gawkers, in fact - the only people there were the 80 DJs and the friends they brought with them. I might have been the only person who went there that wasn't either a DJ or with a DJ.
I was neither a DJ nor with a DJ, and in fact, the crew I traveled with along similar lines.
I feel you about the music, for the most part. I'm weary of DJ's who think they're doing us a favor by "exposing" us to stuff they like. I go to clubs to dance, to hang with my friends, and dance some more. That usually means hearing songs I like and am familiar with, as well as discovering new groups.
I'm all about getting turned on to new artists, but I also like the old favorites. That's why I like [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and Steve Archer--I'm guaranteed to have a good time if they're on the wheels of steel.
Speaking of Archer, Ego Likeness just isn't much of a live experience. They're much better being listened to with headphones on. I was impressed by Stromkern, though. They put on a great show. I hope you stayed long enough to see them.
Plus, bear in mind that the weather was nasty, and it was a Sunday. Even with the holiday, many people had to work the next day. Call it wussy, but some folks just can't do the "Up all night, sleep all day" thing anymore.
And remixes are like assholes--everyone's got one. :) Some are sweet, and some stink. :)
i liked life cried a lot. but for some reason, they were the opening band, b/c they are from way out of town and never played in DC before or something, i hear. so perhaps you missed them. but i thought they were very good.
i am sorry i missed all the indie films that were supposed to be there though. i went up the first time and the screen was blank, went back later and it was just some kind of anime. but, the "chill out" room was louder than the DJed room downstairs almost. i mean, if there WERE films, it sucks that they would have to be subtitled over top of loud music when it was supposed to be a room just for that. that's kind of defeating. o well.
but, we kind of got screwed on our red bull n' vodkas at the outside bar. i'm kind of annoyed about that. he split one red bull b/t both of our glasses and skimped hardcore on the vodka, where i couldn't even taste it and the glasses weren't even all the way full. and earlier in the night we couldn't buy ater from out there b/c the bar tender was too busy flirting w/ some girl and giving her free drinks, etc. while we were trying to pay to get some water for like 15 min or more. it was ridiculous.
but it's always the ppl that make any event and there were some ppl who showed who i was very happy to meet or see again. yet, there were still many remaining who i wish would have come out, it would have been a better time w/ you here. still, i got to dance w/ Jsun, so how could it be a bad night at all?
