Mar. 28th, 2015 12:38 pmI am pleased with myself and sad!
Pleased:
I went to pick up my rasmus auction success - 2 ped files (ped files, ah that never gets old) in great condition, gray color, caster-rolling, and complete with locking keys...for $4.50 each, total $10 w/tax-fee. They BARELY fit in my car, but I pulled it off (was going to be in a pickle if they did not). I was thrilled with my purchase, as I figured the things were easily worth $1-300 each retail. I gambled a little - I didn't go to the preview on this one (a major risk, hence my $10 max budget) so there was no telling the quality (they use the same picture for items of the same type, though they're pretty good about noting differences and defects). I figured I could handle minor problems - and scanning online replacing the key alone was $7. So that they were the best I could have expected, and they fit in my car!? 100% win.
Now checking their retail value

page 11 shows me they actually retail new for $796. Each. Holyshit.
I'm pretty old getting excited about file cabinets sure, but $10 for $1592 worth of stuff!?
Also pleased:
Day 1 after gymtime does not suck, I am not in pain from either running or deadlifts. This means the back is mostly if not entirely recovered, the hip joint that felt a little weird on short runs can survive short runs, and I can move forward with plans for lifting.
Not pleased: My dc shell-of-a-home
No word from the contractor or city, and it's been over 3 weeks since the zoning permit was approved. I'm thinking of this as I have no room for the friggin file cabinets so I took them to the dc home and left them in the "living room." I had to walk into the master bedroom and...remember that it's not just a place I check for leaks or whether anything has been done (for 6 mos, a consistent no). I stood and spoke to myself out loud: "This is where the bed goes. I will sleep here. Light will come through these windows and I'll see it on the wall...this is where I will shit; this is where I will lean as I brush my teeth..." I mean I can't even imagine that this ends anymore. I don't even think of moving out of Arlington...
I haven't talked to Scott lately, but I'm beginning to ponder when it is I get forced into legal action. I currently trust that it's just the city taking its time to issue the rest of the permits, but as 4 doors down is a nearly complete pop-up, and behind my house 1 house was razed and another demolished except for the facade, I can't see why I wouldn't be done by now. So I am also beginning to consider the reality I may eventually need to go lawsuit and/or another contractor. I think I lose $5.5k or more each month delay ($2k basement rental, $1k roommate rental, $2.5k arl rental - or more on each) and there just seems to be no movement and hasn't been for months. I will pursue other things, nicely, before then and still want to stick with this guy, but if nothing ever happens I'm just starting to think about what alternatives there are.
Big chore untackled today: taxes. I got them back from the accountant, who noted the alternative minimum tax that I did not. Not a major blow but a couple more grand I have to shuffle off. With the market kinda meh and no home in sight I lack a current incentive to sell off another stock, but before the final home bill is due (cough on completion cough) I will need to do that.
