vicarz: (Riddle me this)
Curious the things I talk about and don't. Here's a bunch of boring adult shit.

I visited the house with Scott and confirmed - at this point Jordan appears at fault for the delays. The last 2 inspection notes from Oct and Nov both note "no plans yet," and there is nothing for December. I emailed the contractor, and asked him to meet with me (fuck email, it's been 3 months now) (3 fucking months) (3 fucking months while I lose 4-7k per month depending on how you count). A side-gripe is had I moved in by now, when surgery happens I could be climbing a lot less stairs (full truth, then going to rehab would suck far more).

Walking around we noted minor things: can see some air around roof joists (minor, always there it looks like), 1 of the 2 doghouse windows does not open (insane!), the windows in the bedroom are meh, with one practically impossible to close so it might be worth replacing...in fact given the cost I might consider just replacing all the windows now since the framing is already going on (plus I could get efficient ones that also open up, down, swing, etc), I need to confirm building a storage bench by a window where it fits well, decide whether to go all wood or wood and painted wood by the stairs, go over the order of electric switches, check why pipes in the basement appear to be encroaching in the beam / ceiling height...stuff like that.

I found out, yet again, my roofing decision was 100% right. I heard you had to put vents in the roof to make sure the roof was all one temperature so ice wouldn't form on the edges; turns out you also want to avoid "super heated air" in the attic during the summer, particularly if the attic has hvac equipment in it (mine does, though it draws from inside the house of course). I also chose to put 2 vents in the roof - 1 on each end, so that all works out for efficiency gains. At least the roof is a decision that I made, was executed right away and seems well done, and that has only been validated time and time again since made.

Porn! So I don't watch crappy house remodeling porn anymore, or almost never. However: never, ever, by a flip. I don't understand why these guys allow themselves to be seen on tv - you constantly see them making half repairs, poor decisions, and the huge markup they put on each project. As I watched these nitwits re-shingle a roof over existing shingles and replace just the ends of deteriorated beams, I had to wonder if the person who bought the flip job would ever see the show and realize they will need a new roof in just a few years? Do they not notice the flippers drive expensive cars? I mean I can see paying for the convenience of not having to remodel a place yourself, but why risk the disasters hiding behind the walls, and even if done ethically, how many decisions were minor savings compared to a much longer-term benefit of a complete redo?

Unrelated: I've also stopped looking at porn entirely. Probably just a phase.

Money though - I sold off a chunk of stock when one of my old ones (the ancients, they are honored) bumped back up to near record highs - 3.5% in a day I think, though by the time I sold it was down to a mere 2.5 or 3% for the day...since then, with the price of gas falling, the economy tanked and now my entire portfolio has dipped more than some people make in a year. No problem unless the stock market, or rather my stocks, are still meh by the time the bill is due. So in a way, yay timing.

On the other hand I don't have enough left in the bank to make the final payment; never mind upcoming surgery costs thousands and deity knows what else, so I have to hope something bounces back in time for me to sell it without taking a bad hit on my profits / timing.
