Bring on the crazy!
A bunch of coffee fueled writing about nothing, but I’m lacking focus this morning and just plowing this out may make me more productive.
Side note to self - I might consider stopping masturbating so much and actually write something vaguely directed and useful. Whether playing video games, watching tv, trolling stupid internets, or making these list-like posts in eljay, there doesn’t appear a productive end to these activities.
Happily found I have a wireless connection in my home through a nearby xfinity/Comcast website. The downside is my access comes from logging in with my Comcast id, meaning, possibly, if I cut them on moving in I’ll lose that service. It’s a mediocre at best connection, but one more thing making me more able to spend long periods of time in the home.
My contractor Jordan contacted me and said the city required an engineer’s stamp which is both another $800 and another 15-30 WORK days delay. He noted he had previously planned to start 4/16 as his crew was finishing up another location. It seems demolition is fast so there is no point to doing that first? I networked with the neighbors and got both to sign permission letters! On one side, I realized my friend was not very good with writing, so in answering his questions I walked him through each blank, mixing my (honest) confusion to pretend I didn’t notice he couldn’t or could barely read English (or at all, who knows). The other side just tore down the graffiti art covered extension/porch and is making another ($2 says it’s not permitted, though it looks like they’re doing a very thorough job). I smiled at them and laughed off their apologies about noise as I am not usually there, and I both offered them parking in my yard and pulled the gate open to make the offer obvious. They were the ones I was worried about responding, and that offer preceded a written yes (woot)!
I pulled down some wood paneling in the basement and am a bit worried by water damage and a lot of “erosion” of mortar. I’ll see what Jordan thinks of that.
I also tried to get hot water for the shower upstairs by putting on a shower massage with water restriction. Not good results, but I also only have the hot water on “warm.” I pulled the access panel, and found evidence of shitty work - parts stuffed behind the wall, lead solder, scorched wood by the solder areas...curiously turning the cold water off prevents hot water from going through - scaldguard is annoying but I’ll keep it. However, that’s just one more nail in the “gut all plumbing” perspective.
I’ve also decided to coordinate my plumbing work and digout with the city to replace the LEAD INTAKE PIPE that feeds my home. Worth the money to me, and keeping records of this makes the place more marketable both for rental or for sale, as I’m realizing I should keep records of all my not-sexy decisions that show the long-term perspective on all my repairs and upgrades to the property.
Successfully sold all crappy appliances at huge discounts (speed over profit) and have had nibbles on the cabinets. Was kind of embarrassed that a skinny guy was able to unscrew the basement washing machine water connections when I couldn’t - as I’ve shown up strong guys with my grip and do deadlifts raw. I would have thought from his appearance my grip would dwarf his - modesty re-achieved.
Community forklift rejected my fake-wood-flooring but 2nd chance said they’d take them. I wish I had a truck/van, and seeing antiques and “free” listings on CL has really driven that point home.
I’m thinking more of trying to schedule work in a way that lets me move in before everything is done to rent out my condo and get moving on my new phase of life.
