Not really a very housey post, and I'm self conscious about how lame these are compared to the intricate and interesting things my eljay friends are writing. However the most interesting posts are disasters in the making, disasters, and life pain so I heart you but I'll take boring. Pan me like the script of an adventure film with cgi if you like; I would not blame you.

Roof is finished and the skylight is gorgeous! I'm very happy about it, but...you can't see it. Well you can't see it unless you go onto the roof and look down, because with the roof vented by design, if I were to finish the hole in the ceiling drywall, then while you could see the light/glass/ceiling-window, there would be a 2x4' hole in the ceiling that would let a lot of warm air out. Decided to leave the rafters exposed because they're gorgeous to me, and I think I'm going to put this light in there: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70089414/
I'm going to pay for finishing when the rest of the place is done, though as it's over the stairwell I'm downright curious how I'm supposed to get up there for any type of work.

I'm trying to make design decisions now, including colors Christy, to include door type, frames, molding, trim...the details you don't see on a day to day basis. I think I've decided, based on how much work is taking place, to do all floors at the same time because one key expense is exposing and replacing plumbing, at least one vent pipe is dead or blocked and ineffective, so as almost all the plumbing gets replaced including vent lines through the roof, I may as well do the whole kebang instead of pay people to come back later. We're talking swap the broom and kitchen on the main floor, redo the bathroom on the top floor, add a master bath top floor, plus get the laundry up there (I think I gain a closet/linen just by layout issues while I'm at it).

Also very much thinking of central AC.

Important note about roofing: paid the roofer, he gave me a thorough tour of what he did, many add-ons without additional charge as Scott predicted, and...asked me to call him when I do the plumbing because he will come back and re-seal all vents because while he says plumbers are fine, they don't know/do roofing as well as him. Ask me for a reference via msg or something - I'm very happy with him.

I'm a little nervous because at this rate you could say I bought the wrong house. Neighbor went for sale, probably needs a full gut, for $585 http://www.redfin.com/DC/Washington/3615-11th-St-NW-20010/home/10026919 though they lack a front basement access. I think I love my place, but really wish it was me that got it for 407 in 2007, and in all honesty while I intend to live here for at least 5 years,
I'm already plotting my next purchase.

But most of my week's 'venture isn't about the house construction but me and the hood a bit. The mail handler said I could leave the other-people-mail for her, I put it in a plastic bag and yes, she carried it off. Same day, I got my DC driver's license, water bill, and gas bill. All the bills were high, but not so much from use as connection fees and the gas was based on prior average use. I've walked around a lot more and seen a lot of socio-diversity of all types. Last night I really did go, alone, to meridian pint where I caught the end of their "OPM closed the government, let's show all 3 star wars with sound" happy day-hour. Tons of white hipsters, including uncomfortably a girl who ordered right beside me who looked clean but whose breath was terrifying from 3'.

My neighbors continue to poke their head out each and every time I stop by, so I really like the watch-over feel of the place. Somebody took out my porch-wall light, but that may well have been a roofer oops and I wiggled it mostly back in place though the thing is bent and screws stripped. Once again George shoveled my walk for me before I arrived, yeesh (I swept my stairs and shoveled some ice just for show). I think I may beer on the porch with him or something. I _want_ to be a member of this community. I make a point out of eye contact and hellos. I think it's a white mistake, particularly from hipsters, as frankly it seems 'black culture' is very hello social while 'white 20somethings' show manners by avoiding eye contact and any verbal exchange. Who knows.

I'm trolling 2nd chance, and finally visited community forklift to ... really appreciate 2nd chance. There is NO comparison though it's worth visiting both (I mean right now you can get bricks for 20ยข each at CF). My current trolling is for outdoor light fixtures, a full kitchen to work with, and a doorbell (prefer antique/manual/classic).

I've made some floor plans for possible main floor and top floor layout designs - I'll post them soon, possibly today, asking for input and linking from whorebookface.
