Jan. 6th, 2010 09:13 amI'm glad you all enjoyed my "Ron post" last night! He's the reason that I resisted the urge to down about 20 skim-milk white russians (of course the only reason I didn't were the # of calories involved)
Ron. Ron is the guy who cuts into the turn lane then cuts back at the end to get 2 car lengths ahead in the traffic jam, who lies to the cashier to say "I gave you a $20, lemme see the manager," who lies to the waitress about his order "Lemme see the manager - an comp my damn meal," who flicks his cigarette wherever he happens to be, who never puts trash in his car except to throw it out the window, who complained that his printer was off when he was out of the office (for 9 months) because it had to warm up before printing something (he hit print 4-5 times because "It didn't do it," who has a Philippine wife and encouraged me to get one myself (I've written about that extensively before), who lies about anything that might get him any amount of money without batting an eyelash, who gets louder and even more boisterous when he knows he's wrong...the list goes on and on.
but Ron is the guy who showed me how to do this job, who gave me inside information, who taught me to protect myself politically from backstabbers in the office (anyone can make that stuff up, but his advice was real - he predicted things and they did happen or turned out to be true), who helps whether you like it or not, who even helps the backstabbers when they ask for it, who has never backstabbed any of "us," who nudged his easy cases to me over and over again...
He's a dilemma I've faced before - someone that is a pile of shit of a person but loyal to you as a friend. All attempts to get him to "do right" have not so much failed as been laughed off. So I might not spend a lot of social time with him, but in some regards I do respect him and while his ethics are twisted, in those areas he chooses to be ethical he holds higher standards than those around him. Talking to him is kind of like talking to your old racist grandparent - you just kind of brush off the crazy and know that it represents something you hope is dying out.
