May. 1st, 2009 06:52 amI don't have the time to do this justice - with any luck I will later, but ... notes about New York City proper:
1. They really talk like that
2. They really have attitudes like that
3. Yes really, it's just like the damn movies
4. It feels different, and as jaded and not-romantic as I am, there was really something about New York City proper (hereinafter NYC). It felt different - it was New York. Being there made me feel like all the movies I had ever seen where some twit stared at the towering skyline and was in a sense of awe - like I had missed the point. Now I remember the time David Letterman played tic-tac-toe with taxis...I thought it was funny then, but I feel like I _get it_ now. It's not just a city, it's friggin New York.
5. Urine Stench
6. Poetry slam was a blast, though disappointing the criteria for crowd love seemed to be volume rather than substance. Still, a very nerdy poet won my heard as she noted parts of her body resembled oatmeal but she wanted (Fred Pearlman?) on top of her in a pasty spectacle...
7. Poetry two - racism sells. People shouting and singing about racism like slavery was last week were big. NYC is about one-upmanship - for reference see the girl playing not 1, not 2, but 3 race cards at the same time. Mixing that with the victim mentality of being a female - she had a full house of discrimination in her deck and we all saw her cards.
a. Can't get over a girl in a belly-button reaching diving neckline in leopard print complaining about how people stare at her as a sexual object. She was a paralegal. Ok honey, you show your tits but I'm supposed to really get who you are as a person, 2nd rate discrimination-victim of the attention you solicit poet by night, secretary by day, bitch.
8. Ground zero - gawking tourists, nothing to really see, very proud construction workers going slow as they soak up tourist affections and cameras. Overall good feelings there, mixed with painful remembrances.
9. Liberty statute - remains a distant vision for now and a future trip.
10. Work day 1 - Taking their subway is cheap and fantastic, but they're cutting service from what it was. Metro is easier to figure out than the subway, but it is manageable for an English speaking neophyte. My witnesses showed up late and never really seemed focused on what was going on.
11. Work day 2 - I was spanked for 10 hours as my witnesses universally fucked up on the stand, not only doing what I taught them not to do, but setting records for fucking up on the stand. This included lying, arguing, answer questions not asked, explaining when not asked, interrupting me AND THE JUDGE, and my personal favorite YELLING AT THE JUDGE. There was no salvation.
12. Sarah is the awesome, I like her guy, and he laughed at all the right-wrong parts.
13. Spendy.
14. Janna is awesome, she laughs at all the right-wrong parts, still, consistently.
15 (forgot, edit) Hotel was across from a memorial for Irish immigrants, which was being worked on by Latino immigrants.
Apt still covered in dust from paint sanding.
After 12 hours my coworker suggested I go home after I wrote the following heading: Because The Pre-Hearing Report Tabs F1 And F2 (Letters Clearing The Appellant To Work At The Time She Retired In 2006 - Issued In March, 2009) Ruin The Credibility Of The Appellant And Her Doctors, The Agency Encourages Their Admission Into The Record
