My neighborhood does not suck
Mar. 13th, 2007 08:43 amThis AM I'm reeling from losing about 4 hours of sleep last night. I was woken up at 2am, and heard what sounded like a tire screeching - made me think of someone doing donuts on a crotch-rocket. I looked out the window and saw a red classic car, or pt cruiser, behind a street-parked white car whose bumper was lying on the ground. The red car slowly backed into the street at an odd angle, with the engine revving really high and that squealing tire noise, then went slowly up the hill. I called the cops non-emergency number and reported what I saw.
This AM Jen suggested I leave a note on their car - good idea. I had taken notes at the time, so I just added my name and # to the paper and went downstairs to put it on their windshield. I walked up to the car, and like a song by the police, there were a bunch of handwritten notes already washed upon the windshield. Seems I'm not alone in being reporty. I was disappointed when my friend's car was broken into on my street - in fact in the same location - without anyone stopping or reporting it during broad daylight. Well, this 2am crash resulted in at least 5 notes left on the windshield telling the person information about the crash. I like my neighborhood.
Embarrassingly enough, I looked at some of the other notes when the owner walked up. I quickly introduced myself saying "Hi, I was just going to add my note to this pile of notes!" She laughed and talked about how the cops woke her up in the middle of the night to tell her about it. It seems, inexplicably, the guy got away. Still, while it sucks to be smashed in absentia, it's kinda cool that about a half dozen neighbors care enough to call the cops and offer to witness what they saw.
