vicarz: (Year of me)
I'm not posting much at all, as I'm SLAMMED at work, but...
While everyone knows I'm an asshole, not everyone knows exactly what type of asshole I am. Well, I was just listening to hearts of space to some gorgeous but simple piano ditties. I decided this one at about 25.00 in that sounded like the intro to a bad heavy metal ballad, which I was loving (I'm from Gaithersburg lest ye forget), was worth looking up. I searched on their program and found out that the music was by someone called Jeff Johnson. They had an amazon link, so I popped on over and was thinking about buying his shit. Then I saw that he was referenced under christian categories. Uh oh. I did some web searches, found his page linked from arkmusic.com (ark? Uh oh). He actually references celtic stuff a lot, but it appears this instrumental stuff is in fact xtian music of some type.

No matter how much I might like the product, the source, the possible source since I haven't researched the individual, his belief system, the marketers, or the financial structure that would absorb my money should I have made a purchase...even if it was all clean of what I consider sin...not only will I not purchase something that might support the xtian agenda, but now the music is spoiled for me. So, I'm the type of asshole that will let his reactionary defensive anti-religious prejudice ruin a simple piano song. That's what kind of asshole I am.

Hey, I'm not running into Amish schools with guns blazing...

In a wild fit of irony, on the way home I got absolutely lost in some way-freaky jazz on WBFW. It turns out what I was hearing was Abdullah Ibrahim's Africa: Tears and Laughter. If I'm not mistaken, the song I fell for, Ishmael (sample at link, but this portion is pretty tame...the full song will fawkUup), was a Muslim prayer. Despite the fact taht the Muslims want to kill me as much as the xtians, I decided to go for bigot AND hypocrite and immediately buy this album despite the religious emphasis. So, instrumental pretty music from a xtian, out. Muslim prayer chant? In.

I can't figure it out myself.
