Oct. 14th, 2004 06:29 amWhat a boring debate. It was supposed to be a Kerry knock-out, it was a dismal failure on both sides. I am really amazed that this is a least-worst race.
On the positive side, either I've shifted populations or the direction of my attention, or this election has brought a lot of issues to the public eye. Perhaps it's the internet being such a big part of my life (oh dear god am I this bad?) but I hear a lot more fact and logic based debate than I used to. I hope this carries into the next election - not for president, but for the congressmen and local officials who actually make decisions about people's lives. Isn't the executive branch supposed to carry out existing laws, making who is in office less relevant?
I won't listen to anyone that is 100% for either Bush or Kerry. There is no way that anyone agrees with the myriad of issues they 'represent.' Someone that believes w/o reservation that either will represent them on all the issues facing this country is a moron.
The problem as I see it is that many of the issues they're throwing at the president are not executive branch issues. Care about gay marriage and abortion? Vote for or against your congressperson. I think eventually Arnold will be president, for no matter how much you teach government in public school, people still hold the ideology that some men are leaders, and that the one guy in the executive office is somehow in charge in a way that judges and congresspeople are not. I think in their heart of hearts people are voting for someone based on how much they remind them of a backyard bar-b-que buddy, and expect him to grab a gun and shoot the bad guy's henchmen before taking out the opposing leader with a flying scissor-kick.
