Holy shit - the draft inches closer! You thought I was exaggerating about how dangerous the Bush cabinet members were?

Skilled draft - not like the old blue-collar draft! Unlike the Bush years, rich guys can't use the Natl. Guard to dodge it either.

Kewl by me. What are the chances they'll really need illustrators with extensive basic HTML and advanced coffee drinking skills?

That sucks! So they could actually try and commander me because I know 8 languages?! That can't be legal... it discriminates against the educated.

That's a spoof of channel 4 adverts where newsreaders give 2-second statements about their favourite whatevers, or when they were the happiest. I wonder how they did it!? Looks very real!

Back in the olden days when I was a military liguist, they just used to offer you incentives like an "elistment bonus" and a "re-enlistment bonus". Seemed to work okay, plus you get to go to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA for a whole year to learn Arabic before having to actually do real work. It's actually a pretty sweet deal. Well, except maybe for that going-to-war thing, but many linguists ply their trade from behind computers, or from ships and aircraft. The Army interrogators are probably on the ground in not-so-nice places. The military could go a long way toward keeping good people if they didn't treat enlisted ranks like first-graders. I liked my job a lot but didn't care for the crappy barracks and inspections. Also, that anti-gay thing is a bunch of crap and needs to go. There were so many gay linguists at DLI when I was there (20 years ago) that if they'd have thrown them all out, there wouldn't be anyone left.
