Perhaps it's not love that I want. Why not just want the pretty picture, the tv moment, the movie screen? "Look how they dance together." "Yeah, but they hate each other." "So?"
The real thing has too much risk, requires too much work, and even the best magic wears out (or so I hear). Love is just a picture, and whether you snap a digital photo or take the time to paint on a canvas it's still just an illusion. Set goals sure, but there are some areas goals are not appropriate to set. Love is a burden to be avoided, but you can make pretty pictures. Enjoy the moment, and feel it just as you feel sad during a movie. Let yourself go in conscious escapism, but don't think for a minute it's real. Is there really anything more important than dancing with a slight buzz? If there is, who cares. I have work to do, another illusion to be pursued.

Love is a puppy. You feel love when you look at a puppy, that's true love. It's cute, you coo, they lick your face and you melt. If you walk away and grab another, and it would give you the same reaction. They will all make you feel the same, filled with love. Each will love anyone that takes the time to pet it. It's a dog, having all of 3 favorite places to be rubbed and really just liking being touched anywhere (not so different than I it seems). That love grows into a dog, a big clunky dependable dumb something. It can be replaced with any other dog, or a puppy to try and rekindle the experience.

Depends if you want a standard cute level over the life of the mail-order bride (Asian) or a major hotness collapsing into grandmotherly babushka-dom (Eastern block).

The guy I know who got a Russian mail-order bride wound up with super-hot porn star and they stayed married for like ten years. She is still super-hot, decided to go back to Russia, they divorced. Guy got a second mail-order bride, this one Asian.

So you should seriously talk to him. He's the expert. No, I'm not making it up.

That...is...terrifying. Even though I'm making references to things that actually happen, I forget that it's anything but a joke.

For all my cynical ranting...I do believe in love. I tend to think the real thing comes out more like a good friendship, but still don't like the life-link for practical reasons idea. I have to mock it my own way I guess.

I was *way* more cynical about the concept (mail-order brides) until I met this couple (guy and Russian woman; haven't met the Asian one). They both knew exactly what they were up to; they got exactly what they wanted out of it and they were content. Everything came out even and nobody was taken advantage of. It gave me a lot to think about.

It fits the arguments for arranged marriages and against romantic ones. I'm a product of my culture perhaps, but prefer the concept surviving the disaster of romantic love rather than choosing practicality. I really try to mix both.

I've listened to the arguments about expectations. If you expect the tv/movie dream you're fucked. If you expect it to accomplish certain goals, and it does, and you hope it doesn't suck, and it doesn't - then you're happy with it. If you expect your life to feel like the displays in ads...

I have found a lot of Asians attractive, as the 'typical' physique is very in line with my preferences, though admittedly I'm only scratching the surface in learning the difference between the many types of Asians. I'm not as ignorant as one of our military Joes that thinks they get a 'subservient' by 'choosing Asian,' although the focus on education value is appreciated. They are also in general hair-light in both quantity and texture.

On the other hand, Russian and German accents are friggin hot, the bodies of the people I've met are also within my yum range, and hair growth tends to be blond so it's light in texture and aesthetically appealing. There is the advantage of, given my appearance, having children that look like me.

Ok that's about as offensive as I can stand while still bordering on some possible funny. Notice the total lack of any hint of substance.
