We've stayed in quite a few bed and breakfasts lately. Every time I do it, my gay gene explodes and I fantasize about life doing the same thing. Only, I like the idea of having money for owning a beautiful house, but I know there are tons of shitty people who use service industries.
This past trip we talked a LOT to the owner, and it...pushed my dream back. He did much of the work himself, detailing things like how to buy the right wood for the right price true to the history of the building, how to plane-hone-(carve?) the wood for each piece of moulding, how you'll have to wait while the local shops sell woodwork to Dubai...I mean this place had actual water closets with giant copper pipes. How much did he do?
He also detailed the local economics, the "gentrification" (not called that) and how hard it is to get a critical mass for the market; suggestions about things the government can do, a great quote:
"If everyone else is moving forward, standing still is moving backwards."
notes about having an "export market," and comparisons to more attractive businesses in the driveable area.
I drive down the highway and see gorgeous houses, and my first thought on each of them is "I would hate to live so close to the highway." Keeps things in check.
No fucking updates on the fucking house. No, that's not true. It looks like the heat is going in and per what I saw this past weekend it may be on now for all I know. Heck he better not finish too soon or I'll be stuck with a bill which I have to pay for with stocks when the market remains meh.

It's for sale, by the way, and has been for years. No takers.
