I've posted many times in a hurry, sloppily, and looked back later only to give in and edit. I feel like including the mess, missed words, typos, and horrible spelling would be fun on occasion.
Unclear why the song "private eyes" is running through my head, other than when traveling the hills of PA I heard it on a random radio station as I drove. I still like the radio, with the illusion that when I listen to a song I'm not the only one.
Also, for my failed "trying to be machismo" years, I was around in the 80s and secretly liked happy, gay, music, but tried not to and would never admit it. I may not even like the song, but there is something, still, refreshing about being able to listen to a "gay" song without fear, self-loathing, or self-consciousness. Ironic then, "Private eyes (clap clap) are wa-tching you..." makes me so happy today.
Radio has been curious. I travel a fair amount for work and don't have gigamillion music devices on. I don't like having my ears blocked, with my fear of being assaulted, training about that sort of thing martial artily, and control fetish somewhat appeased by knowing what is going on in the world around me. So I listen to the radio as I drive across strange rural parts of the country.
Hearing alt music on college radio vacillates between giving me wood and making me nostalgic as hell. That's rare though, and easily available if I took the time to listen to online radio.
What I've heard is curious. It used to be a constant ability to find classical music, typically NPR, and conservative talk shows. As nationwide networks got big, conservative radio took over - followed quickly by xtian radio. I got to hear fake countdowns talking about the "biggest hits in the country" with little code words tucked in like "positive," "spiritual," and "uplifting." If I didn't hate xtian rock at a glance, hearing the words quickly sealed the disgust. The message pummeling is insatiable, desperate, and lonely (to my ears). Still, at least it was trying to push a something as opposed to the conservative talk, which was all anti...anti anything, never suggesting anything positive, just saying what should not be, should be restricted, and removed.
Then...with wider use of satellite radio, pop music (from top 40 to country) took off and replaced the wacky stuff (I assume via popularity?) This resulted in my driving into the hills one night listening to Kei$ha make stupid trainwrecks so entertaining. However lately what I hear is...classic rock. Tons and tons of classic rock.
I am lucky I grew up with "classic" rock and can hear it for all my years (it seems after that...things really started sucking? What was it that made that so special for so long?) I know I got sick of it - the music feels old and tired to me, and I can not imagine people today associating the music with rebellion of any sort as our current leaders all listened to this and quote it while they enforce societal rules. I think I understand more now why you need new music for each generation - no matter what the words were, or the televised hippie dreams, the general rule is now enforced by this "generation" (or the powerful members of it) so you cannot respect the betrayed theory presented of that day that now has camera speed traps and enforces drug prohibition while making war.
(end my pet theory of radio before I get carried away)
