Speaking of tech geek stuff:
I hooked up a wireless 4 port router and got a wireless card for my laptop a la no-name brands from Microcenter. 11mps sounds just fine to me. The question is now: how do I secure my connection with pw and sorforth? I don't want the neighborhood to use my connection, nor have access to my stuff.

I feel naked.

Speaking of naked
This girl shows up in the boxing class, and I'm in love. She's pretty, in shape, showing up for a boxing class, and when we do the warm-up exercise where we punch our own guts and jump, she states "Now that's very alpha-male."

Speaking of alpha-male...not
I got mini-mouse! I found a 3/4 x 2.5 or so" black optical no-name brand mousey for my laptop, who's name is now "LilBlueBitch." I can game on the laptop using the wireless network! I'm a geek with a tiny lil mousey! Whee!

In the basics:
1) turn off the SSID brodcase (after changing the default) This is the name of the "lan". Turning off the brodacast means your base is no longer anouncing to the world that it exisists. People can still of course listen for your lap top and it chattering.

2) turn on WEP. It sucks but its better then leaving the sliding glass door unlocked.

3) turn on MAC level security. Assuming that you've got your laptop hapily talking to your base after steps 1 and 2. go in and only allow your MAC address to talk to router. (Easest way to find it is in the router logs).

All this will keep joe blow out of your connection. If somone wants in they can... but short of putting a firewall between the router and the rest of your lan its the best your going to do.

Much appreciated...it will be even more appreciated when I figure out what and where those things are. I ran wizards and found the plug. I've tried looking for the stuff under network connections but to no avail.

A techie once said of me "None too bright, this one."

Try puting the IP of the thing into IE.... without knowing the brand its hard to get more specific. For the client side.. should be some kind of config uitlity...

Ick. I've given up for a time - the laptop now frequently crashes when I boot and/or attempt to power down. I now know where the batterys is coz yanking it is the only way it will now power down. Something goes horribly wrong if the laptop boots with the thing in it, but it runs fine otherwise. Not good.

I've wasted 4 hours or more on this project today, and I don't have that kind of time at all. Thx for the help, but I have to finish my homework :(

Oh gee, my computer started acting funny on the weekend too. It kept freezing on me, so I ran this virus scanner thingy and cleaned out the files. Now it works it works fine, or so my mom told me when I walked in the door @ 12am last night. *teehee*
hey I told her I would fix the damn thing, before I went out- I didn't say I was going to be there when she got home. *smirk* :) all better now
The wierd is, is that you just got that one though, right? So, it shouldn't be acting up right? I would try to find my warranty on that lil bitch. :)
