For the record, a cure for angst is work. It worked in “Old Yeller” and it’s working for me. I have no time or energy to worry about a thing, including why I’m in law school in the first place. I only have immediate and semester long goals that require my attention.
Traffic rules: What a boring thing to talk about!
Last night class was cancelled as the storm took out the power at GMU. I’ve been thinking about a friend (where is Christie anyway?) who was complaining about how people were not following the traffic law at a 4 way stop. I had a hard time with that, finding I had never heard of the rule she spoke of. My understanding was that the drivers would take turns based on order of arrival to the stop sign, though if people could go w/o interfering with other drivers they could proceed as well. That seems to be the majority rule, and seems to me more fair than waiting based on direction to be traveled.
With spots of power out, I traveled home through an out stoplight. I stopped for the non-light, having recently heard an update on the news that rather than treat it as flashing yellow in the major direction and flashing red in the less-traveled, that you are supposed to treat an out light as a 4-way stop. In my base, there was a worried looking female pedestrian at the side of the road. After 3 or 4 people blew by the out-light, another followed my example and stopped to allow the woman to cross. She smiled and waved.
A short time ago I would have been aggravated by either situation, considering myself in a rush when in fact I had no reason to hurry to my destination, and thinking I new the ‘rule’ and other people were just ignoring it. Understanding that other people are following different rules - honestly believing they are right, and that people haven't taken the time to think through why they rush when they are in a car but then walk slowly when outside of it (that is to say, they have no reason to rush), helps me manage little differences w/o getting upset.
Cut me off, however, and I’ll jump out and kick your ass in person! “Think you’re bad in that car mofo? Step out or I’ll drag your ass to the curb...” (ok some issues not quite resolved...)
