I saw an old man, perhaps my age, with a scraggly mohawk in the gym yesterday and thought he looked silly. I contemplate dying my hair purple during leave breaks, and don’t...why? Laziness is huge, but so is wondering if I would look silly.

Really though, I still have this identity as rebellious...but I’m not. I’m just not. I like rules, I care tremendously about property interests, and essentially conform to law. I have worked for decades and now those rules protect my stuff, my interests. I want to install laser drones to incinerate people who throw trash in the recycle bin, but I want to eliminate all social legislation. I want dui limits set to reasonable levels, eliminate dui charges against bike riders for fuck's sake, and eliminate speed limits, while making liability more costly in accidents. I’m not just a blind rule fetishist, but care about rules that make logical sense and good public policy to me. Still, why do I still wear cute geeky t-shirts when I work out 4 times a week in the gym? I invest in stocks and real estate. Aren’t I just holding onto a cute identity with no substance in action?

I saw an old man, perhaps my age, say you. I can't take any of the rest of this seriously because you just called yourself an old man.

Maybe it's different for dudes (I think it is), and for, like, professional people (I think it is), but I think I'll be dying my hair blue (or other similar colours) for a while yet. Maybe not when my hair's white. White hair sounds cool. Also, that profile pic is hilarious.

I find your idea of rebellion to be odd, and I think you are still rebellious although perhaps less visibly so. But simply being openly bi/pansexual doesn't fit the status quo. And there are lots of other things I see too - not about spending beyond your means and saving for the future, driving an old car because it works. Politically fairly far left. Accepting of people who are different. Not religious.

Perhaps you're less out there than you used to be, but still far from the norm. So the black clothes and smart-ass T's seem right for you - the suits OTOH read as a costume to me; something you put on to look like you belong in certain circumstances.

And you wear different personas depending on the group you're in, just like most of us do. I think that's part of age and experience.

I have no idea how old you actually are, but I love seeing people with differently colored hair at pretty much any age. And also, as a total square rule-followery type, I suspect that what your other friends are saying is true and that you would probably come across as rebellious to me regardless :-)
