It depends on the kind of pain. I'm against using machines - they tend to isolate movements which can lead to uneven muscle development (i.e. if your quads are huge but the attaching muscles don't grow, you can hurt yourself with your own leg muscles). Right now my program is mostly squats, deadlifts, bench press, and overhead military press.
I had shin sprints that went away with weight training, but running seemed to make my knees start crunching as they are now. Lifting weight doesn't seem to bother them. However, if your pain is in the joints I'm supposed to recommend you see a doctor.
My new excuse that girls say they don't want to get bigger is really a lie - is based on high heels. If muscles look bad, explain why so many lipstick females put on high heels which make all the leg muscles flex and look larger?
