By going shopping & watching TV, you are choosing to participate in the dominant culture. And Xmas is what the dominant culture DOES.
(I hate it too -- when I do find myself having miscalculated such that I need to be in a store at this time of year, I wear my iPod. It helps a LOT. (I take it off when I get to the register.))
